The Foreign Movie Tariffs: What’s Going on And Should us Otakus be Worried?

Whether you like him or hate him, we can all agree on President Donald Trump’s positive achievements that he’s made in regard to freedom of speech and protection from internet censorship imposed by European governments. The first starting with the corrupt payment processors and his executive order in tackling their corruption. Secondly, his hostile and bold opposition to the insane internet censorship and surveillance that has been occurring in Europe and parts of the world lately. Regardless of your political position, right, or left, we can all agree on the dangerous consequences of censorship, corruption, and mass surveillance. Of course, that’s just my opinion.

Unfortunately, there’s one glaring issue that a lot of people, including myself, can’t stand, and that’s the tariffs. The policy of tariffs has become a major issue for us, the American otaku. Ever since, the president has begun his tariffs’ policy worldwide, with the topic being specifically about Japan, the life of otaku investment on many specific goods like figures, cosplay, and other stuff have been GREATLY disrupted. From the specific tariffs on certain sections, to tariffs on other nations that contribute to making and importing these goods, and finally, the removal of the De Minimus rule that has caused a MAJOR disruption among Japanese companies that export these goods to the United States. Now, another major issue is occurring for the American otaku, and it’s the topic of foreign made films, the potential tariffs, and the impact it will have on the movie industry, but, exactly what’s going on, and should we be worried?

Adult Video Game Company Nutaku And Segpay Sued by Florida For Violations of State’s Digital Age Verification Law

Look guys, I get tired of repeating the same topic over and over again, but, this issue is truly becoming a major problem. 2025 has been a year of massively brutal attacks on the freedom of expression regarding anime and manga. The truth is, the issue has become so tiring and bothersome that I honestly can’t stand reporting stuff like the one I’m talking about right now. Yes, once again, censorship is involved, and, like previously, this one involves the obscene material violating age verification. So, what’s going on?

If you’ve been following me for a while now, chances are, you’ve heard of the rampant attacks on freedom of the internet, as well as attacks directly involving anime and manga. It first happened in Texas, currently happening in Michigan, and, my state Florida. Yes, my home state Florida is having another epicenter of anime and manga controversy. Two years after when Assassination Classroom got banned in a school county library back in 2023. Now my beloved Sunshine State enters into another controversy and involves Nutaku, an adult gaming platform and Segpay, a secure online payment processor. So… What’s going on?

Demon Slayer Infinity Castle’s Success And Anime’s Mainstream Triumph Over Hollywood And Disney

Let’s be honest here… Our beloved anime and manga has become mainstream now… There is virtually NO denying it whatsoever. Now, obviously, when I talk about the mainstream appeal of anime and manga, I am well aware that the mainstream appeal is exclusively towards anime and manga series that people only talk about. Example, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Dadadan, and Chainsaw Man. Have you noticed a pattern here? All Shounen. In other words, while I am greatly aware that this mainstream appeal mainly applies to anime and manga that’s considered typical of the shounen trope, it doesn’t remove the fact that anime and manga as a whole has become ridiculously popular. Indeed, it has… Especially when you are about to hear what happened…

Demon Slayer: Castle Infinity has made history. Not just history, but MULTIPLE achievements in Japan, and worldwide. The movie has now earned a WHOPPING $550 million at the box office. Guess what? That number has now updated to $556 million. In fact, it could be more as I’m typing in this article. This movie is SO popular, that Crunchyroll is working to get this movie to win the Oscars… That’s how ambitious they are… The movie has broken records left and right. The question is, which records have Castle Infinity broke? What does Disney and Hollywood have to do with this topic? Well, that’s when the important part kicks in…

New Proposed Bill Ban in Michigan Targets Manga And Other Adult Content

My fellow otakus, I’m pretty sure you have noticed that this issue has now become a pattern. Censorship after censorship, it seems like this issue never stops. Since the start of this year, there’s been a reckless attack on freedom of speech, freedom of creativity, and freedom of the internet. The excuse? Porn… Yep… Pornography!!! Since the start of 2025, there’s been a crusade against pornographic material on the internet. The same reason is always used, “think of the children!”. It first started this year in Texas, and now, state after state, the issue gets worse. As you all know, anime and manga rely heavily on the internet for basically everything. Watching, reading, games, community, fan art, etc. In other words, aside from engaging in real life social events, depending in which state you’re living in, the internet is another important place for otakus to invest time engaging with what they love. Unfortunately…

A new bill in Michigan is being proposed. What is this bill, you ask, of? Well, this bill, is what Texas is already doing, but literally on steroids… Yes, otakus in The Great Lakes State are about to get rocked by something unexpected from an unlikely law proposed by lawmakers in Michigan… The shocking part is… Manga is, LITERALLY, mentioned in this new bill. Here’s what’s going on!

Texas Senate Bill 20 is Now in Effect: So What Happens Next?

Earlier this year, I spoke about the new controversial senate bill that threatens anime, manga, and video games in the state of Texas. That bill, Senate Bill 20, was a bill that passed through both the senate and house in the Texas Legislator. Then, it was signed by governor Gregg Abbott at the governor’s mansion. Since then, the law has been passed and has been in effect since September 1.

Texas Senate Bill 20 Puts Texan Otakus in Serious Trouble As Bill Potentially Targets Anime, Manga and Video Games for “Obscene Ways”

The law wasn’t just trouble… It became a major problem for all otakus in Texas, since the bill itself was vague when it came to the definition of what defines as obscene material against those not of legal age. There was no pure definition or correct bases into what was considered legal or not. The worst part is, the determination of what is deemed legal or illegal is left up to interpretation. So exactly what’s senate bill 20? According to law, this is what it’s about. If you want to know more, then you may want to read my previous article about the bill.
