NOTE: This is Part 4 of The Article
Last year, I made an article that covered the ranking of all 50 states based on the popularity of anime from worst to best, on Google trends. As a result, that article was one of my very firsts. As I was starting, I noticed that although it received a positive fanfare among readers, I made quite a bit of mistakes in regard to the info and resources that I wrote in that article. In fact, I missed out on a lot of important info that should have been said during that time. Now, here I am with a new article of the same subject, but now added with a nicer layout, updated info, better research, and custom descriptions said by me that is based on my research.
The popularity of anime has grown incredibly for over the last decades. While the medium itself always had an American presence between the 1960s to the 1980s. However, it was not until the 1990s when the medium began to knockdown the mainstream audience thanks to the introduction of anime on children’s television channels. When the 2000s dawned, the popularity of anime increased only more tenfold thanks to the advancement of the internet and the availability of forums, websites, fan subs, and social media. Throughout the 2010s and 2020s, the medium has enjoyed unprecedented growth thanks to the rise of streams, social media, and more websites and forums that make it easier for otakus to access too. Now, anime has become so popular now that you can pretty much find fans of anime in the middle of nowhere. Even in those middle of nowhere places, goodies for otakus exist at every corner of the map, and all 50 states have anime conventions or some kind of ComicCons with anime and manga stuff located.
Continuing on from my previous article. I used Google trends to see which state searches up on anime the most, and the results were interesting. However, instead, I wanted to see which state identifies most as otaku by simply seeing which state looks up the definition as the most. Not only that, but I will also be using sources and research backup to explain the possibility of the question on why the state is ranked on that number. This list, unlike the previous one, makes a lot more sense now, and some of the states that you will see ranked will probably surprise, and number 1 may surprise you the most. Also, unlike my previous article of the same topic which contained all 50 states in one article, instead, I have decided to publish separate articles by adding only 10 states to the article ranked from least to most. So that way, readers won’t be turned off by the horrific TL;DR issue, by scrolling through a long page with nothing but texts, and instead, enjoy reading the article with a moderate amount of reading and waiting in anticipation for the next article of the same topic. Without a further a do, let’s get started!
20. Rhode Island

Nickname: The Ocean State
Population: 1.096 Million
Region: New England, Northeast
Capital: Providence
Abbreviation: RI
Number of Conventions: 1 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 42 (As of 2024)
My fellow otakus, here we have it. The highest ranked state and the most otaku state in the New England Region. The Ocean State, also known as, Rhode Island. Arguably, one of the most surprising rankings on this list. Many, including myself, expected Massachusetts to be the highest ranked state from the New England region. Well, surprise! The Ocean State has more individuals who describe themselves as otaku. It has more than anywhere else in New England. Regardless, that is an amazing achievement. Back to the topic, here we have Rhode Island, also known as the Ocean State. As the tiniest state in the country, and the second most densely populated state behind New Jersey. Unfortunately for otaku in The Ocean State, Rhode Island struggles to offer a strong landscape for otaku. This is due to its size and reputation as the smallest state in the country. In terms of its anime convention scene. The Ocean State has just one anime convention. This is the Rhode Island Anime Con, and it’s located in the capital, Providence. As stated before, it’s the only anime con in Rhode Island. It’s the most popular and the most attended. Mainly, because it’s the Ocean State’s only anime con. It was first inaugurated in 2023, making it one of the recent big anime cons to open in America. From 2004 to 2024, the anime convention seen in Rhode Island was inconsistent. Earlier anime cons existed but eventually folded over different spans of years. On the positive side, Rhode Island stands out. It is among the few New England states with an anime convention. Other states with conventions include Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine. Sorry, New Hampshire, but Rhode Island impressively hosts at least 47 anime and manga shops. It is the tiniest state in the country, yet it surprises us with this achievement. This is impressive. Rhode Island, as a tiny state, has more shops located than states with a larger land mass. Its economy, population, and number of cities are smaller, yet it still exceeds others in shop numbers. It just comes to show that size and number really is just an image.
Overall, Rhode Island’s landscape for otakus in The Ocean State comes as no surprise. This is because, as stated before, it’s the smallest state of all the other 50 states in America. Many otaku in Rhode Island will be pleased to know their state has at least one anime convention to attend. Additionally, due to the state’s small landmass, travel distance won’t be a problem. Heck, it’s so easy for them. Even other New England folks and people from the Northeast will have no issue attending. Rhode Island’s only anime con, Rhode Island Anime Con, will surely be a beacon. It will serve as the core pillar for otakus in Rhode Island. Nonetheless, many Rhode Island otakus crave more anime cons. They will probably find themselves attending other anime conventions in neighboring states. These include New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Yet that is no issue for them. The state is home to a plethora of neighbors. This makes it easy for Rhode Island otakus to attend. Especially when it comes to the travel. There are 47 anime and manga shops in Rhode Island. This large number ensures that otakus in the state can enjoy their investment in otaku goodies. Rhode Island is tiny. But, there is a big love for those identifying as otaku in that state. It is truly amazing to discover. Rhode Island ranks highest in the New England region on the topic of otaku. The state’s anime and manga market will no doubt continue to grow, like the rest of America. Surely we know there is no stopping the growth of anime and manga in America. Rhode Island, along with the rest of the New England region, will continue to grow.
19. Indiana

Nickname: The Hoosier State
Population: 6.806 Million
Region: Midwestern
Capital: Indianapolis
Abbreviation: ID
Number of Conventions: 4 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 78 (As of 2024)
A return to the Midwestern region, here we have Indiana, also well famously known as the Hoosier State. Indiana is famously known as the Crossroads of America. Ranked 19 on this list, this makes Indiana the second-highest ranked state to be from the Midwestern region. Indiana’s ranking is very impressive. This is impressive given that the Hoosier State itself is neither the most populated nor the largest. It is also not the richest in the Midwestern region. In fact, Indiana is considered moderate. Yet, it still ranks as the second highest. It outperforms other states in the Midwestern Region. These states are popular or well known, like Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, or Missouri. Nonetheless, Indiana’s landscape for otakus has a low number of anime conventions. In the anime convention scene, Indiana ranks among the lowest in the Midwestern region. It is outclassed by neighboring states like Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan. In fact, Indiana’s number of anime conventions are the lowest since Iowa’s number of anime conventions. On the bright side, Indiana is at least home to 4 anime conventions in the state. Interestingly, Indiana hosts one of the biggest anime conventions in the Midwestern region. It is also among the largest in the country. Anime Crossroads proudly stands as Indiana’s largest anime convention. Remember what I said before. Indiana is known as the Crossroads of America. Anime Crossroads symbolizes that name for Indiana’s anime convention. As stated before, Anime Crossroads is Indiana’s largest anime convention and was first inaugurated in 2009. In fact, it only recently celebrated it’s 15th anniversary this year. It attracts many attendees both in-state and out-of-state. It also receives extensive media coverage from local media outlets. The other three notable anime conventions of Indiana are EvilleCon, PopConIndy, and Evansville Anime-Fest. Indiana has many anime and manga shops. This is despite the number of anime conventions. Indiana’s shops can be considered some of the best in the country. The Hoosier State is home to at least 78 of them. Indiana enjoys having one of the largest numbers of anime and manga shops. It ranks third in the Midwestern region, only behind Ohio and Illinois. Now that’s truly amazing.
Overall, Indiana is known as the Crossroads of America. Many otaku in The Hoosier State believe Indiana’s otaku landscape is satisfying and successful. Still, as stated before, the anime convention scene is lagging. It is far behind other Midwestern states. It has the lowest amount since Iowa. The good news is that many otaku in Indiana can be pleased. They know The Hoosier State has more than one anime con in their state. This is unlike other states like the earlier mentioned Rhode Island. Indiana otakus can enjoy their state’s largest anime convention, Anime Crossroads. It gives Hoosier otakus the privilege of having a big anime con. This helps it stand out as one of the biggest in the Midwestern region. To make it better, they still have 3 other ones that they can visit in their state. Another positive is that neighboring states like Illinois and Ohio have many anime cons. These conventions keep many otaku in Indiana occupied, as well as parts of the Midwestern region. Similarly, their anime and manga shop numbers are some of the best in the region. They also stand out throughout America. This is a huge plus for Hoosier otakus. It’s no surprise that Indiana ranks so high. The best part is that the growth of anime and manga continues to grow in America. There are no signs of it stopping. Indiana can proudly boast itself as an emerging market not stopping anytime soon. Indiana takes the crown as being the sub champ of the Midwestern otaku, but, who’s number 1…?
18. Idaho

Nickname: The Gem State
Population: 1.901 Million
Region: Northwest, Pacifc Northwest, West Region
Capital: Boise
Abbreviation: ID
Number of Conventions: 2 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 37 (As of 2024)
This is a rare instance of another state from the western region. Interestingly, it appeared a lot earlier than usual. Other western states typically last on lists. It is The Gem State, known as Idaho. Neighboring to states like Utah, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, and Washington State. The landscape for otakus in Idaho is much like many states. These states border or are part of the mountain region and west coast states. Anime conventions are very limited in Idaho. There are only 2 anime cons located in the gem state. This makes Idaho one of the few states in the country to not have more than 5 anime conventions located. Compared to other states, Idaho has very few anime cons in the western region. It is slightly ahead of Montana, but behind neighboring Utah. It is far behind other states like California, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington State. Idaho’s most notable anime convention in the state is Anime ID, which simply stands for Anime Idaho. Anime ID is by far Idaho’s largest anime convention. This is surprising because Idaho lacks a large number of anime conventions. The truth is, this is Idaho’s only anime con in terms of anime and manga specifically catered. As stated before, Anime ID is the largest anime con, and was first inaugurated recently according to research. As expected, it has the largest number of attendees in the state. People attend both from within Idaho and from other states. The event has also recently received extensive media coverage from local media. Comparable to Otaku, Idaho had another anime con. It was known as Anime Oasis. This con was Idaho’s sole anime convention and was very popular in the Gem State. Yet, the fate of the anime con took a massive nosedive. The COVID-19 pandemic ultimately forced it to cancel in 2020. Since then, it seems to have suffered controversy and inconsistency. Now, it remains unknown if it will resume anytime soon. It did not host in 2024, and it is unknown if it will in 2025. For now, many otaku in Idaho will have to wait and see. Aside from that, there is also Idaho Horor & Pop Con. But, that is a con that is based general pop culture and not exclusive to just anime and manga. On the positive side, Idaho has at least 47 anime and manga shops. This is a good amount for a state that is relatively sparse in the otaku landscape.
Overall, as stated before, the Gem State Idaho has an otaku landscape. Being from the western state, many would generally consider it underwhelming. This is especially true when compared to other states and those with like atmospheres for otakus. One of the biggest issues for many otakus in Idaho is the lack of anime conventions. This problem is partially due to the location in the Gem State. For many otaku in Idaho, the recent issues with Anime Oasis that marred with controversy will leave many otaku bugged. On a positive note, otakus in Idaho will appreciate having at least one anime convention in the state. This is comforting compared to states without a single anime convention. Anime ID will be the primary basis for all otaku wanting to attend an anime con in Idaho. This is aided by the fact that it’s their only anime convention in the state. Still, many otaku in Idaho need to visit neighboring states for more anime convention activity. Traveling to nearby states will offer more options for them. Comparable to Utah, otakus in Idaho have a major advantage. They are close to other states with a powerful otaku landscape. Most specifically near the pacific states that border the pacific ocean. When it comes to the anime and manga shops, Idaho has a moderately positive amount. The 47 anime and manga shops give otakus in The Gem State assurance. They can continue stocking up on otaku goodies left and right. For many otaku in Idaho, the state has a lot of room for improvement. Yet, the anime and manga market continues to grow non-stop. There is no doubt that Idaho, like the rest of the country, will continue to grow into greater heights.
17. Kansas

Nickname: The Sunflower State
Population: 2.935 Million
Region: Midwestern
Capital: Topeka
Abbreviation: KS
Number of Conventions: 2 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 58 (As of 2024)
To my fellow otakus, remember when I recently talked about Indiana’s status? I mentioned it was the sub champion of the Midwestern region. This was about which state is the most otaku according to google trends. Well… Here it is… The moment you have been waiting for… I consider this one of the biggest upsets on this list. It seems like the most otaku state in the Midwestern region is The Sunflower State, Kansas. Now this is a major surprise… Still, once again, as stated before, it just comes to show that size and population don’t matter at all. Even the most sparsely populated states that don’t have the glamorous spotlight have a large number of otakus living there. Kansas, The Sunflower State, ranks highest from the Midwestern region. It ranks above Iowa, which is at rank 47. In spite of this, Kansas’s landscape for otakus is weak. The state is known for its sparse population and vast emptiness. It is primarily linked to down-to-earth industries like agriculture and rural life. Hence, it is only home to two anime conventions. Luckily, Kansas offers something beneficial to otaku. It hosts a notable anime con that is popular among enthusiasts. Naka-Con is the biggest anime convention in Kansas. It is also the oldest in the state. Additionally, it ranks among the oldest and biggest in the country and the Midwestern region. First inaugurated in 2005, Naka-Con is a staple for otaku in The Sunflower State. It has enjoyed a wide attendance in state and out of state. It has also received extensive media coverage from local media outlets. This year, Naka-Con is about to celebrate it’s 20th anniversary this year. Such a milestone for a state like Kansas. On another positive note, Kansas is home to another anime con, Anime Festival Wichita. It is based on the real Wichita, Kansas. Anime Festival Wichita also opened in 2005. It is one of Kansas’s oldest anime cons in the state, the region, and in the country as a whole. It seems like 2005 was a turning point for otakus in Kansas… Now that is amazing chapter in American otaku history! Kansas have low anime con numbers. But, it is home to at least 58 anime and manga shops. This is impressively high for a state like Kansas. Truly an impressive feat for The Sunflower State!
For many otaku in Kansas, a paradox seems to exist. It can cause a massive rift for what many would consider Kansas. The state, on one hand, is praised because it is home to only two anime conventions. These two anime cons, Naka-Con and Anime Festival Wichita, are extremely anime and manga oriented. This pleases many of the otaku in Kansas. To make it better, at least otakus in Kansas have two anime conventions. This is better than some states, which only have one or even no anime con at all. It is better knowing that Kansas otakus have a major anime convention in the state. Both conventions have been around for more than 20 years. This cements Kansas as a state that is no stranger to the otaku vibes. Now, on the downside, as stated before, Kansas has a sparse population and industrial lifestyle. Because of this, many otaku in Kansas face challenges. The Sunflower State’s landscape in terms of anime cons is still low and weak compared to other states. In fact, states bordering Kansas, like Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado, have far more anime conventions. This gives otakus in Kansas a big opportunity to travel to their states. They can attend anime cons and enjoy otaku activities. There are many anime and manga shops in Kansas. This amount is impressively large for a mostly rural state. These large numbers will make many otaku in Kansas enjoy spending much on otaku goodies for their investment. For many otaku, this will be one of the most controversial rankings. This applies not just to those in Kansas but throughout America. Yet, for many otaku in Kansas, despite not possessing the strongest otaku arsenal, they will continue to gain. Many in The Sunflower State will gain from the infinite growth of the anime and manga market in America. The Sunflower State reigns as the Midwestern region’s most otaku state. It will continue to experience growth. Greatness will continue to grow in Kansas.
16. Delaware

Nickname: The Diamond State
Population: 1.003 Million
Region: Northeast, East Region, Mid-Atlantic
Capital: Dover
Abbreviation: DE
Number of Conventions: 0 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 16 (As of 2024)
Now this… Is yet… This is one of the biggest upsets on this list. It is incredibly shocking. I love to analyze states with their otaku landscape. Even so, I am struggling to comprehend it. How does a state like Delaware rank number 16? It is the highest on this list without an anime convention. It also has only 16 anime and manga shops. It ranks higher than other states large in population, GDP, and popularity. Now, please don’t get the wrong idea. I am actually happy, amazed, and proud. I admire knowing that Delaware has a large number of otakus. This is true even with its landscape. But… I am just so shocked, puzzled, and confused… Well, regardless of that, here I would like to welcome you to Delaware. Also known as The Diamond State as its flag’s shape symbolizes its meaning. It is another state from the Northeastern region of the east coast. It is our first visit to an east coast state outside New England since Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was ranked 29. As mentioned earlier, I’m saddened to say that The Diamond State has many challenges. Unfortunately, it has one of the worst otaku landscapes in the country. Delaware is the first state since New Hampshire on this list to not have an anime convention at all. Making it a heavy blow for many otaku in The Diamond State. There seems to be no new anime convention planned for Delaware. Recent news updates and research confirm this. In fact, the anime website, “Anime Conventions”, doesn’t even have any mentions of anime cons in Delaware at all. So for now, Delaware is anime convention-less… When we talk about the anime and manga shops in Delaware, sadly, the situation is akin to the anime conventions. The Diamond State is only home to at least 16 anime and manga shops in the state. Far below the average and one of the lowest in the country. Delaware is lacking, and it needs improvement for otakus.
Delaware’s otaku landscape is sadly one of the worst in the country. This is the reality for many in The Diamond State. The Diamond State for otakus is sparsely weak. It lacks a strong arsenal of everything otaku in the state. Many otaku in Delaware must attend anime conventions elsewhere. Delaware has no anime conventions at all. It seems like the state’s absence of an anime convention will hold for an unstable future. On the other hand, there are some positives for otakus in Delaware. They have the advantage of bordering states known for being great for otakus. These neighboring states are highly regarded when it comes to the otaku landscape and convention scene. Delaware otakus have a major plus. They are next to states with strong and large anime cons like New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Traveling to these states is easy for otaku in Delaware, as the distance is close. So that is a worry that is lifted for otakus in Delaware, to an extent of course. To add another positive, Delaware otakus are near the states we mentioned earlier. These states arguably have some of the best anime conventions in America. This proximity is an extra advantage for Delaware otakus searching for otaku activity. Another positive is, at least Delaware is home to some anime and manga shops. Even though they aren’t the largest, fans can be pleased. There are still some places to shop at to invest in otaku goodies. Delaware is filled with many otaku. Research and data confirm this. Nevertheless, the state’s weak landscape holds back many from fully enjoying it. There is no news of any anime convention happening soon. Still, many, including myself, hope it will happen soon. The anime and manga market continues to grow in America, including Delaware. In the digital age, otakus in The Diamond State have infinite access to otaku greatness.
15. New York

Nickname: The Empire State
Population: 19.84 Million
Region: Northeastern, East Region
Capital: Albany
Abbreviation: NY
Number of Conventions: 11 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 72 (As of 2024)
Start spreading the news, New York New York! All 50 states are awesome. Nevertheless, The Empire State is arguably the most popular, influential, and well-known. It is renowned not just in America, but worldwide. In anime and manga, New York, specifically New York City, is always a popular destination. It often serves as a setting, whether a side or a main one, for many anime and manga series. New York is popular among Japanese people in Japan. Many otaku in The Empire State appreciate New York’s vibrant otaku culture. The city does not disappoint or underwhelm at all. On the other hand, it is surprising that The Empire State does not rank in the top 10. Ranking at number 15 is slightly underwhelming. Regardless, you are about to see what’s in store for otaku in The Empire State. New York is the most popular state in terms of soft power. It has the third largest economy, behind Texas and California. It is also the third most populated state in the Northeastern region. Additionally, it is the largest populated state bordering Canada. Furthermore, it is the second most populated state on the east coast, behind Florida. It also has the city with the largest population of all in America. Ironically, it has the second largest population in the world, behind Tokyo, Japan. As you probably know, much of New York’s otaku landscape is centered in New York City Metropolitan. There are other areas in New York with a strong otaku presence, but only slightly. For many otaku in The Empire State, New York’s otaku landscape is arguably one of the best in the country. Controversially, it is considered the best in the Northeastern region, besting other neighboring states located in the same region. Now, I know what you are probably thinking? Wait, 11 anime cons? That’s it for a whole state like New York? Other states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, and North Carolina have about the same or slightly more than New York’s. Wait? What’s going on here? Well, remember what I said before? Much of the concentration is focused on New York City. This seems like a massive disadvantage for those outside the metro. But, believe me, what’s in store for otakus in NYC and even those outside is exciting. As I mentioned earlier, New York hosts at least 11 anime conventions. Many of these conventions are in New York City. The most notable anime convention located in New York is Anime NYC, located in Manhattan New York. It is not just New York’s biggest anime convention. It is also the second biggest anime convention in the United States. Second only to the Anime Expo in Los Angeles. It is the largest anime con on the east coast. It is also the largest anime con in the northeastern region. This includes regions bordering the Atlantic and those in the eastern time zone. The convention is indeed vast. It has the second-largest attendance in the United States, only behind the Anime Expo. With more than 100,000 attendees, if these numbers keep increasing, it can surpass even the Anime Expo in Los Angeles. Anime NYC is incredibly popular. It is recognized by the state government and city of New York as crucial for tourism. First inaugurated in 2017, The convention prides itself as a hotbed for anime and manga fans in NYC. It just doesn’t enjoy massive media coverage from local media outlets in New York. Even worldwide media, including Japan. Yes… Can you believe it? That’s how popular Anime NYC is. Unofficially, Anime NYC has emerged as an east coast rival to the Anime EXPO of Los Angeles. As if the Dodgers and Yankees weren’t enough… On another bright note, New York’s other notable anime cons include UBcon, Tora-Con, and Sugoi Pop Con. They are all located outside in Buffalo, Rochester, and Fishkill. The other anime conventions are mainly located in New York city. New York hosts at least 72 anime and manga shops. This number does not make New York the largest. But, many of these shops cater specifically to anime and manga fans. To make it even more amazing, some of their otaku goodies come directly from Japan. The city is also home to the amazing Kinokuniya. It is an awesome dream otaku shop from Japan. It holds many amazing anime and manga goodies directly from Japan. New York holds the honor of being one of the few states to have one located. Also, on a quick trivial note, the state is home to some official companies. These companies contribute to the growth of the anime and manga market in America. Truly an amazing feat for The Empire State.
Overall, you just can’t deny it. New York’s package for otakus is not the largest. Still, many agree that it is arguably one of the best states for otakus in America. Being ranked 15 on this list is no accident. The state also has one of the highest numbers of individuals identifying as otaku. The primary key to New York’s strong otaku landscape goes beyond just the number of anime cons. There are at least 11 anime cons in the state. These make them stand out as one of the biggest in the northeastern region and the east coast. The key fact is that New York otakus have one of the ultimate privileges. They know they have the second largest anime convention in America and the largest in their region and time zone. NYC Anime is more than just an anime convention for New York otakus. It can truly be seen as their mecca of all anime cons in New York and across the United States. To make the matters even better for them, here are two amazing advantages for New York otakus. They have the ultimate anime convention by their side. They also have the free and easy choice to attend other anime cons located in New York. These cons are in the city of New York. They are also in the rest of the New York state. Having 11 of them gives an even greater advantage for New York otakus. Another positive is their many anime cons in the state. They also have opportunities to attend conventions in the rest of the region. This includes states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and even neighbors Canada. Not just local states that are already big and famous, but another nation…? You literally can’t ask for more! There are 72 anime and manga shops in New York. These shops are mostly exclusive. They won’t stop New York otakus from spending on otaku goodies. Especially being exclusive from Japan. Not only that, but with Kinokuniya located in New York, it’s an even better plus for otaku in New York. The anime and manga market is growing in America across all 50 states. New York is part of this expansion. There is no doubt that New York will position itself as one of the four pioneers. It will become a prominent face in the significant growth of the anime and manga market for the American otaku. For many in New York, its almost a perfect world for them… The only problem is, New York otakus have one concern. They are not going to like the state that is above them in the rankings and it’s their eternal rival…
14. New Jersey

Nickname: The Garden State
Population: 9.267 Million
Region: Northeastern, East Region
Capital: Trenton
Abbreviation: NJ
Number of Conventions: 11 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 50 (As of 2024)
That’s right… Say hello to New York’s great eternal rival. Aka, New Jersey, The Garden State located right exactly to New York. This state seems to have a higher number of those identifying as otaku. With that, it seems that many people invest their lives heavily in the otaku lifestyle. They do this way more than their neighboring rivals, New York. New Jersey is known for its advanced economy. It has a high population and metropolitan lifestyle. It hails from the northeastern region and ranks as the second-highest state in this area. This state borders the Atlantic Ocean. New Jersey’s landscape for otakus can be described as one of the best in the country and the region. Heck, New Jersey’s good otaku landscape would probably spark a debate. Some even argue it’s the best of the Northeastern Region in the country. Not only that, but it competes closely with its neighbor, New York. It matches up in both anime conventions and anime and manga shops. New Jersey’s anime convention landscape is highly favorable. It is welcoming for otaku living in The Garden State. New Jersey is home to at least 11 anime conventions located in the state. This matches New York’s number of anime cons. Both states are among the few in the country and region with more than 10 anime conventions. This record ties New Jersey and New York for the second-largest number of anime conventions in the Northeastern region. Only Pennsylvania hosts the most anime conventions in this area. Which anime convention is the largest in New Jersey? It is none other than the famous AnimeNext. Located in Edison New Jersey. Yet, like other anime cons, AnimeNEXT’s status is uncertain. The anime con underwent recent changes due to ownership decisions. It also faced struggles from the COVID-19 lockdown enacted during the pandemic. Because of this, AnimeNEXT did not host last year in 2024. There has been no news about plans for AnimeNEXT to host in 2025. If you’re searching for other large anime conventions in New Jersey, The Castle Point Anime Convention is a good choice. It is the largest apart from AnimeNEXT. While not the largest, it can be considered the second largest in the state. Located in Secaucus, New Jersey, it was first inaugurated in 2008. The convention continues to host as of 2025. An Anime con is already scheduled to host in 2025. Castle Point Anime Convention has a large number of attendees both in state and out of state. It also enjoys recent extensive media coverage from local media outlets. Other notable anime cons in New Jersey are Kogaracon, Clovercon, and Anime NJ++. When it comes to the anime and manga shops, they do not rank the highest in numbers. But, there is still a good amount. New Jersey is home to at least exactly 50 anime and manga shops. For something like New Jersey, its not bad all.
Overall, as stated before, New Jersey is the state that borders with the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of the northeastern region that borders with rival states like New York. New Jersey has one of the best landscapes for otakus in the state. It is also renowned in the region. Some argue it is the best in the entire region. Otakus in New Jersey know they can boast about having one of the largest anime conventions. This is true in both the state and the region. New Jersey’s largest anime cons aren’t just one, but at least two due to the issue of AnimeNEXT. Many otakus in New Jersey hope that AnimeNEXT returns as soon as possible. I share this hope, even though I am not from the state. New Jersey otakus can rest assured that Castle Point Anime Convention is a good fit. It is the second largest anime con in the state and has temporarily replaced AnimeNEXT as the largest. Endless otaku activity continues there. New Jersey is home to 11 anime cons. This means otaku investment at these anime cons is endless. All sorts of other otaku activities persist ongoing and never stop for otakus in New Jersey. It’s even better because they have at least 11 anime cons. This makes them a state with more than 10 anime cons. Also, thats not all. New Jersey is surrounded by states with many anime conventions. Otakus here can boast about this fact. The best example is knowing they are only 1-2 hours away. Anime NYC, the second biggest anime con in America, is that close to New Jersey. Nearby states include Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maryland. They will offer plenty of options for anime cons to otakus in New Jersey. There are many anime and manga shops in New Jersey. These will certainly keep many New Jersey otakus occupied and invested in their otaku goodies. The Garden State is home to 50 such shops, which is a good amount for a state like New Jersey. New Jersey’s ranking is intentional. You can clearly see the landscape in The Garden State. Not only that, but its ranking is SO ironic and symbolic, as its placed right exactly to New York. Aside from that, the anime and manga market is continuing to grow. New Jersey is already highly ranked. It has abundant otaku resources. It’s no wonder The Garden State is loud and proud for otakus. The growth will continue to reach great heights.

The iconic words of… FLORIDA MAN! FLORIDA MAN! FLORIDA MAN! Say hello to the Sunshine State known as Florida. We return to the southern region yet again. Interestingly, It is our first state from the southern region and the only one on this list. This makes part 4 as the only list to have one state from the south ranked on this list. This is also our first visit since Arkansas ranked 22. With Florida ranked 13 on the list, it is the third highest-ranked state in the southern region. It is also the second highest-ranked state bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, it ranks second among states using the Eastern Time Zone. People and media from other states often regard it as an enigma. Their reactions range from curiosity to jokes. It has weird ways that puzzle others. The Sunshine State. Despite its wacky reputation, it is actually one of the great powerhouses of the United States. It is secretly beloved by many in the country. Florida is incredibly popular. The state proudly boasts having the second highest number of visitors every year. Only New York has more visitors. Not only that, but Florida also enjoys having one of the strongest soft powers in the country. The Sunshine State is experiencing a recent golden age. This new age revolution occurs as the state continues to break records with positive growth in many industries. It establishes itself as a state of prosperity for outsiders. It is a popular destination for retirees and those wanting to have a vacation in the country. It also attracts tourists from all over the world. Florida has the fourth largest economy in the country. It has the third largest population in the country. It is also the most populated state on the east coast. Florida borders the Atlantic and uses the eastern time zone. It is the second most populated state in the Southern region behind Texas. It is the only state, along with Hawaii, to have a tropical climate. It is the warmest state in the country. It is located all the way down south. Florida is well known for its scene of nature. It is also famous for the beautiful beaches of the country. Florida’s landscape for otakus can be considered one of the best in the country. Some argue it’s the best state to be an otaku. Nonetheless, many from other states will heavily debate this. They boast of having the same or higher otaku power than Florida. Let’s return to the topic of Florida’s achievements. Is Florida a modern record breaker in the otaku landscape? When you examine the numbers and what it offers, it certainly is. Well, when one looks at the numbers and what it has in store, then it certainly does indeed. Florida has many anime conventions. Their numbers are not just in abundance. Some claim they are among the best of all time. The sunshine state is home to at least 43 anime conventions in Florida. Those aren’t just some small numbers that hover around 12-16… Those are numbers FAR beyond of any other state in the country since starting with this list. No state has even come close to matching Florida’s number of anime cons. This trend has been clear since we started with Wyoming back at rank 50. It’s just beyond belief… At least 43 of them… Not even the high powers of states like New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Massachusetts boast such numbers. With that record, this makes Florida the state with the third highest amount of anime conventions in the country. The question is? Who’s second and first? Well, that will be saved for later. Florida, like many states, has their largest anime con in their state. Notably, Florida hosts the largest anime con in the Southeastern region. It hosts the second largest in the entire Southern Region. It also has the largest in its borders. Furthermore, it is one of the largest anime conventions in America. What’s the name of that anime con? None other than the famous anime convention located in Tampa, Florida, known as Metrocon. Metrocon is not just a big anime con in Florida. It is also well known by many. It establishes itself as one of the big meccas of everything otaku in The Sunshine State. First inaugurated in 2003. It continues to enjoy a wave of attendance within the state. It also attracts attendees from outside the state. Metrocon is incredibly popular. It is recognized by the most mainstream media outlets in Florida. It is considered a significant tourism factor in The Sunshine State. Media outlets greatly hyped the importance of Metrocon. They described its 2003 inauguration as “A win for Anime fans in Tampa.” What a piece of history… Also, that’s not it… There is more to their landscape… The Sunshine State’s other notable anime conventions are many. If we discuss other well-known anime cons that rival Metrocon’s popularity, we can mention Wasabicon, Anime Matsuri, and Megacon. These are located in Jacksonville and both Orlando. The number of anime cons in Florida seems overwhelming. Wait until you find out how many anime and manga shops are in store. The Sunshine State is home to at least a whopping 104 anime and manga shops in the state. Those numbers are just unbelievable. Florida has the most anime and manga shops of any state since starting with Wyoming. It is also the second state to have more than 100 anime and manga shops, after North Carolina. This is just amazing for otakus in Florida… truly it is… Although it’s unknown if it’s the highest in the country, we will have to find out. Still, that is just amazing for otakus in Florida.
Overall, the truth is, everything described about Florida is basically obvious. Although not ranking in the top 10 confuses many. It certainly confuses myself. None the less, it’s no accident why Florida has a high ranking as a state for otakus. This ranking is especially high when compared to other states. Florida’s abundant landscape is a resource of envy. Despite the ranking, Florida is still definitely one of the best states to be an otaku in the country. Controversially, it is the best in the country for some. One major reason for Florida’s high success in the otaku landscape is the state’s many anime cons. Their unprecedented numbers contribute substantially to this success. For many otaku in Florida, the endless amount of otaku activity is basically infinite. There are 43 anime cons. They include big names like MetroCon, MegaCon, and MatsuriCon. It’s basically every week of otaku activity for Floridian otakus. That’s how amazing Florida’s landscape for otakus is. This mainly happens because Florida’s anime cons are in nearly every region of the state. Be it north, central, or south, with more than one, and Florida has it. Also, they are large. Florida’s travel-friendly size is a huge gain for otakus attending anime conventions. The state’s perfect size makes it easy to travel for these events. View it this way. Florida is moderately sized, making travel for otakus super easy. There are 43 anime cons located throughout the state. Florida otakus don’t need to worry about large states with few anime cons. They also don’t worry about large states with sparsely located anime cons. They also don’t have to travel from a tiny state with only one anime con to find bigger events. That alone, with 43 anime cons in a perfectly sized state, will make the otaku vibes in Florida eternal. Basically, almost every week or every month is basically an event for otakus in Florida. Many otakus in Florida feel awkward being at the bottom end of America’s map, famously known as America’s basement. This is because they are only bordered by Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Yet, Florida otakus are grateful for and enjoy greatly from their proximity to anime cons. As you remember, the states mentioned before have cons that are moderate in number, and they are decent. But, they are not as impressive as Florida’s landscape. Regardless, states like Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi offer a moderate to strong and good otaku experience for Floridian otakus. Of course, other states like North and South Carolina, and Virginia offer a good experience for otakus as well. Florida otakus will travel longer for the best experiences. They will spend more time traveling to reach the best destinations. They will travel through the border of the Gulf of Mexico. Their southern buddy Texas offers an unparalleled otaku experience compared to other states. This gives Florida otakus an unprecedented experience like no other. As stated before, there are 104 anime and manga shops located in The Sunshine State. They offer otakus in Florida an endless amount of activity. Otakus can invest in various otaku goodies. The best part is they are everywhere. This is possible thanks to the state’s size and the number of their shops. Many of their anime and manga shops are exclusive. They are full of import merchandise exclusively from Japan. It is truly amazing how Florida has progressed so much as a good state for otakus. Only 2 decades ago, it was just starting. It was relatively moderate compared to other states like California, Texas, New York, and Washington State. Now, time has passed. Florida has established itself as one of the top dog otaku states. Some even regard it as the number one best state in this country for otakus. There is no doubt about this. Because of this, Florida is one of the mascots of the progress of anime and manga in this country. It is also one of the thriving states of America for the anime and manga market. The industry continues to grow in this country. I expect the anime and manga market to grow significantly in Florida soon. Indeed… Florida man absolutely loves his otaku stuff.
12. New Mexico

Nickname: The Land of Enchantment
Population: 2.116 Million
Region: Mountain, Great Plains, West Region
Capital: Santa Fe
Abbreviation: NM
Number of Conventions: 2 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 25 (As of 2024)
Back again to the west coast and here we have a state that is very unique among many other states. That state is known as New Mexico, The Land of Enchantment. New Mexico’s ranking is third highest in the country for states with desert climates. Like most states in America, New Mexico is considered to have a population that doesn’t stand out. Its population is not among the highest in the country. The population is moderately sparse. The state is filled with industries that contribute to the country. It also has agriculture and known for its forests and desert climate. New Mexico is known for agriculture and traditional Native American tribes. It has a demographic that is vastly different from the rest. New Mexico is a desert state. It is comparable to states like Nevada, Arizona, and parts of California and Texas. Unfortunately, the climate landscape in The Land of Enchantment is low. In spite of its high ranking, it remains one of the worst in the country. When it comes to the anime convention scene in New Mexico, the numbers are very low. The state is home to only two anime conventions. This means that New Mexico continues to lack a significant anime convention scene. It shares the same problem with other states that do not host any anime conventions with five or more events. Let’s revisit the topic of anime cons in New Mexico. The largest anime convention in New Mexico is Anime New Mexico. As stated before, it is New Mexico’s largest anime convention. It is located in the famous and most populous city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. According to extensive research, I found out that Anime New Mexico is a new anime convention. Its first inauguration in the state was only recently, in the year 2022. Since it is young and new as New Mexico’s biggest anime con, it started to gain extensive media coverage. This coverage is from local media outlets. In fact, the return was widely celebrated by New Mexico media groups. It was fully embraced after the conclusion of the pandemic era regulations. Sabaku Con is New Mexico’s other anime convention that exists in the state. It formerly held the title as The Land of Enchantment’s only sole Anime con before Anime New Mexico in 2022. It first opened in 2013. Sabaku Con continues to host events today and enjoyed its hosted event in 2024. When we consider the number of anime and manga shops in New Mexico, unfortunately, it is small and weak. New Mexico has just 25 of them. This number is low compared to other states. It makes New Mexico among the lowest in the country and its region. What matters at least is otaku stuff is still in New Mexico regardless.
Overall, many otakus in New Mexico face challenges. Unfortunately for them, like otakus in other states with weak otaku landscapes, their experiences are limited. The otaku landscape in The Land of Enchantment is not just low; it’s arguably among the worst in the country. Otakus in The Land of Enchantment gain from having at least two anime conventions in their state. It is even better knowing that otakus in New Mexico can enjoy an anime con. Their state manages to host a big event for many to enjoy. That’s not all. New Mexico is now recognized for anime conventions. The state has hosted anime cons for more than a decade and continues to do so. Many New Mexico otakus will lament their state’s limited anime offerings. Unfortunately, there is no news of more progress in sight. Nonetheless, they will be pleased knowing that their state has at least some anime conventions. Anime New Mexico is New Mexico’s largest anime con. It will please many otakus in New Mexico. They know their state offers an anime con that is large and provides endless otaku fun. Many can experience this in New Mexico. Sabaku Con is another event for otakus in New Mexico. It doubles the fun for them. It also cements New Mexico as a newcomer to otaku culture, familiar to many enthusiasts. There are positive aspects for otaku in New Mexico. They know they are close to states that excel in the otaku landscape. Otakus in New Mexico will be pleased to know they are next to a powerhouse of otaku culture. This powerhouse is Texas, a big and great state. It is known as The Lone Star State. Texas is one of the states with the best and most powerful landscapes one ask for. They also border Arizona, a state with a strong otaku landscape. This can appeal to many otakus in New Mexico. Finally, they are next to one of the most otaku states in the country. It is the most otaku industrialized state in America. This state is California, the Golden State. Which will for sure help and the fill the joy of many otakus in New Mexico too. Unfortunately, otakus in New Mexico face another challenge. They sadly lack anime and manga shops. There are just 25 shops located in the area. On the bright side, at least shops still exist for New Mexico otakus. A major key to New Mexico’s high ranking on this list is its demographic reasons. These play a significant role in New Mexico’s high rank despite its weak otaku landscape. Once again the Land of Enchantment proves that passionate individuals exist in large numbers. This happens regardless of the state or the weak climate for otakus. As the industry grows in this country, with anime and manga experiencing explosive growth, New Mexico will surely progress.
11. Oregon

Nickname: The Beaver State
Population: 4.246 Million
Region: Northwestern, Pacific West, West Region
Capital: Salem
Abbreviation: OR

For the first time since we began with Wyoming at rank 50. The highest-ranking state on this list is once again from the west coast region. This is the first time it has been consecutively from the west coast region. It is also the first time since part 5 that two states from the western region are on this list. Who is that state I am talking about? it is none other than The Beaver State, known as Oregon. Oregon isn’t just new to our list. This is the first time we finally have a state from the Pacific West region. It is also the first time we have a state that uses the Pacific time zone. It’s also the first instance of a state that borders the Pacific Ocean to be on this list. Oregon is located in the northwestern region of America, close to Canada. Despite being from the Pacific West, it is the lowest-ranked state. It borders the Pacific Ocean and uses the Pacific time zone on this list. In spite of this, Oregon has a moderate to a good number of anime conventions in the state. Still, The Beaver State actually boasts some of the best otaku landscapes in the country. Oregon’s strong otaku landscape is due to its proximity to states that are powerhouses for otakus. Another advantage is that Oregon has a west coast region advantage. It borders the same ocean as Japan. It is one of the first states to get goods like anime and manga thanks to it pacific region location. As earlier stated, Oregon’s landscape for otakus is excellent. This is despite its relatively moderate number of anime cons for a state of its size. The Beaver State is home to only 5 anime conventions in the state. That makes Oregon one of the many states to have more than 5 anime cons located. Nevertheless, it is still considered not such a large amount compared to other states. Still, a state for its size is good regardless. When it comes to the largest anime convention in Oregon, it is Kumoricon. This convention is located in the famous and well-populated city of Portland, Ore W. This event is a well-known big anime con. It is not only popular among otakus in Oregon. It is also known beyond other states that border Oregon on the west coast. Kumoricon was first inaugurated in 2003. This makes it one of the oldest anime cons in America and the west coast region in the Pacific. The anime con is among the most popular and beloved. It enjoys a large number of attendees both in the state and out of the state. Local media outlets in the state of Oregon have celebrated it numerously for years. In fact, Kumoricon is so popular, that it is even part of Oregon’s tourism attractions courtesy of Oregon Travel. Now that is a huge and massive honor for an anime con. Other notable anime cons in Oregon include Kisuucon, Ani-Medford, and Wasabicon PDX. Both Kissu and Wasabi are locate in Portland Oregion. When it comes to anime and manga shops in Oregon, they are top-ranking. Oregon is home to at least 87 anime and manga shops located in The Beaver State. That’s a large number for a state like Oregon. It ranks higher than states that are known to be bigger, more popular, and economically stronger. This comes as no surprise thanks to Oregon’s geographical location.
Overall, Oregon, The Beaver State. Oregon is part of the Pacific region. It borders the Pacific Ocean and is close to two states with a powerful otaku arsenal on the west coast. It is no surprise that Oregon’s landscape for otakus ranks among the best in the country. Keep in mind, Oregon is the lowest-ranked state in otaku rankings among west coast states. These states border the Pacific Ocean and follow the Pacific time zone. Yet, in spite of this, the state ranks much higher compared to other states from different regions. These states even boast a strong arsenal of otaku landscape in some parts. None the less, Oregon can definitely boast having a stronger arsenal and even a good when compare to most states. Certainly, it’s no wonder why many people in Oregon see themselves as otaku. This is mainly due to its helpful west coast roots. The strength of Oregon’s landscape for otakus is due to many factors. Otakus in The Beaver State enjoy knowing their state has 5 anime cons. They also know their state hosts a big-name anime con, popular not only in Oregon but across the country. This con is a significant part of Oregon’s tourism. That puts in an amount of endless fun for many otaku in The Beaver State. This fact is aided by Oregon being home to many other anime cons. These events keep Oregon otaku occupied with endless activity. Also, an even bigger advantage for otakus in Oregon is well… They obviously know they border two states. These states stand out as having one of the greatest and most powerful types of otaku arsenal in America. Those neighbors are Washington State and California.
