NOTE: This is the final part of the article
Last year, I made an article that covered the ranking of all 50 states based on the popularity of anime from worst to best, on Google trends. As a result, that article was one of my very firsts. As I was starting, I noticed that although it received a positive fanfare among readers, I made quite a bit of mistakes in regard to the info and resources that I wrote in that article. In fact, I missed out on a lot of important info that should have been said during that time. Now, here I am with a new article of the same subject, but now added with a nicer layout, updated info, better research, and custom descriptions said by me that is based on my research.
The popularity of anime has grown incredibly for over the last decades. While the medium itself always had an American presence between the 1960s to the 1980s. However, it was not until the 1990s when the medium began to knockdown the mainstream audience thanks to the introduction of anime on children’s television channels. When the 2000s dawned, the popularity of anime increased only more tenfold thanks to the advancement of the internet and the availability of forums, websites, fan subs, and social media. Throughout the 2010s and 2020s, the medium has enjoyed unprecedented growth thanks to the rise of streams, social media, and more websites and forums that make it easier for otakus to access too. Now, anime has become so popular now that you can pretty much find fans of anime in the middle of nowhere. Even in those middle of nowhere places, goodies for otakus exist at every corner of the map, and all 50 states have anime conventions or some kind of ComicCons with anime and manga stuff located.
Continuing on from my previous article. I used Google trends to see which state searches up on anime the most, and the results were interesting. However, instead, I wanted to see which state identifies most as otaku by simply seeing which state looks up the definition as the most. Not only that, but I will also be using sources and research backup to explain the possibility of the question on why the state is ranked on that number. This list, unlike the previous one, makes a lot more sense now, and some of the states that you will see ranked will probably surprise, and number 1 may surprise you the most. Also, unlike my previous article of the same topic which contained all 50 states in one article, instead, I have decided to publish separate articles by adding only 10 states to the article ranked from least to most. So that way, readers won’t be turned off by the horrific TL;DR issue, by scrolling through a long page with nothing but texts, and instead, enjoy reading the article with a moderate amount of reading and waiting in anticipation for the next article of the same topic. Without a further a do, let’s get started!

Since the beginning with South Carolina, the southern region has consistently appeared on every list. Now, Tennessee has officially climbed onto the top 10, cementing the southern region as a powerhouse for otakus in America. Tennessee is the highest-ranked state from the southern region that does the region itself not border the Atlantic Ocean. Tennessee has pioneered many cultural aspects of America. These include country music, blues, and other economic achievements. Tennessee’s otaku landscape is one of the best in the country. It excels in the southern region and even bests states typically known for more. This situation is very different from what many, including myself, believed. Tennessee is usually known for middle power modesty and a rural lifestyle with little in it. As stated before, The Volunteer State’s landscape for otaku is amazing. Tennessee is home to at least 14 anime conventions located in The Volunteer State. In terms of numbers, Tennessee ranks fourth. It is one of the states with the largest number of anime conventions in the southern states. That number is much higher than some of its regional neighbors. It is even higher than states typically expected to have more, like New York. The biggest anime convention in Tennessee is Anime Blues Con. It is located in the state’s most populous city, Memphis. First inaugurated in 2011, it has been celebrated for over 14 years. It has become one of the most famous anime conventions in Tennessee. It is also one of the most famous in the southern region of the United States. In fact, Anime Blues Con is so popular. Even mainstream local media outlets in Tennessee give great, extensive coverage to Anime Blues Con. Another interesting point about Anime Blues Con is how it highlights the significance of blues music. This genre is crucial in Tennessee. As mentioned before, Tennessee is a state renowned for revolutionizing both blues and country music. Other notable anime conventions located in Tennessee include Con Nooga, Yama-Con, and MTCA. When considering the amount of anime and manga shops located in Tennessee, they are among the best in the country. The Volunteer State is home to at least 67 anime and manga shops. An excellent number, and that makes them among one of the largest in the country. Truly an impressive fest for Tennessee.
Tennessee’s landscape for otaku living is arguably one of the best in the country. As stated before, this isn’t coming from big name states with big name cities. Instead, it comes from a state with a modest arsenal that has defied all odds. It truly establishes Tennessee as one with hidden potential that awaits more. Many otaku in Tennessee gain from knowing their state hosts 14 anime conventions. That is not far higher among the many other states, like Florida. Still, it is still an excellent number for otakus in a state. Otaku in Tennessee also enjoy the fact that their state is home to a big name anime convention. Some other states don’t have as many anime cons as Tennessee. Tennessee is a state for otakus. They will enjoy the endless amount of otaku activity done in a single state. Meaning that endless investment in otaku fun will never end. Not only that, but Tennessee also shares borders with states having many anime conventions. This means otakus in Tennessee gain not only from their own state’s offerings. Neighboring states like Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas offer a positive experience. They guarantee fun for fans in The Volunteer State. Otakus in Tennessee will also enjoy knowing there are at least 67 anime and manga shops. This leaves many in the volunteer state with endless opportunities to invest in otaku goodies with no end in sight. Tennessee, like many other states, is enjoying tremendous growth in the anime and manga market in America. It continues to expand with no signs of stopping. For many otaku in The Volunteer State, there is potential for great growth in the otaku landscape. The future looks bright with many awesome otaku vibes booming in the state.

Here we have another state from the southern region. Once again, for the second consecutive time in this list, the south continues to enjoy a strong streak of states. They have been landing into the ranks of this list since starting with South Carolina, ranked 48. Here we have Virginia, The Old Dominion State. It holds the honorable title of bordering both the southern and northern regions of the United States of America. Home to many important history points in American history. Virginia’s ranking in this list puts it as a state with the title of second in two things. It is the second highest ranked state on this list that borders the Atlantic Ocean. It is also the second highest ranked state in the southern region. It is the second highest ranked state from the eastern time zone. Yet, it is the highest ranked state from the southeastern region to be on this list. In other words, Virginia takes a lot of silver medals for its past achievements. But it takes the gold medal. It is the number 1 otaku state that borders the Atlantic in the south eastern region. Virginia’s anime con landscape is considered excellent for average standards. When it comes to anime conventions, Virginia is home to a total of 11 anime conventions. That means there are only a few states in the nation with more than 10 anime cons. NekoCon is the largest anime con located in Virginia. None can claim to be the largest other than NekoCon. The anime con, Nekocon, is the largest anime convention located in the state of Virginia. Not only is it the largest, but it is the most popular anime convention in Virginia. It is well-attended and located in Hampton, Virginia. Notably, it is Virginia’s longest and oldest running anime con in The Old Dominion State. NekoCon first started in 1998. This makes it one of the oldest anime cons in America. Virginia is one of the few states in the country to have an anime con launched before the 21st century. It enjoys strong popularity in the state and as well as the region. In fact, it’s so popular that it enjoys extensive media coverage from local media outlets in Virginia. Because of NekoCon’s strong popularity, the official government of Virginia acknowledges it. They recognize NekoCon as an important place of tourism for Hampton, Virginia. Interestingly, there is also another anime con as old as NekoCon that resides in Virginia. Its called, Anime USA. It was first inaugurated in 1999. This makes it one of the oldest conventions. It is dedicated to the hardcore otaku living in Virginia. Other notable anime conventions in Virginia are, Galaxycon Richmond, Anime-Mid Atlantic, and Superstar Anime. When it comes to the amount of anime and manga shops located in Virginia, the numbers are moderate to good. Virginia is home to at least 59 anime shops. Although not among the largest in the country, it is still a good number regardless. In fact, that makes Virginia high among others when it comes to bordering the atlantic and in the southeast.
Overall, Virginia’s otaku landscape can be described as heavily favorable for the otaku living in the old Dominion. It’s no wonder Virginia ranks so high for those identifying as otaku. As stated before, Virginia’s landscape for otakus is great mainly due to many factors. First, the state is home to 11 anime conventions. This means that otakus in Virginia will spend a fun and endless amount of time investing in activities. These activities will keep the otaku occupied like crazy. Another important factor to Virginia’s otaku landscape is the presence of a major anime convention. Additionally, it hosts one of the oldest in the country. Truth be told, that is a major bragging point for otakus in the state of Virginia. The best part is, it’s a big event that has many attending in state and outer state. In fact, once again, that is also greatly aided by the presence of other notable anime cons in Virginia. Also, that’s not all! Another significant contribution to Virginia’s positive landscape is that many otaku in The Old Dominion can visit other states. These states either have a large number of anime cons or a few notable ones considered popular nationwide. Gosh, you just gotta love the location of where Virginia. Being in that state, you practically have the whole region to yourself. Either it be in the south, north, or even the Midwest, the travel is endless for otakus in Virginia. Also, please keep in mind that Virginia is the state that is nearest to Washington D.C. Do you know that means? Simple! Otakus living in The Old Dominion State can attend Otakon. It is the third oldest anime con in America. Only the Anime Expo of Los Angeles and A-Kon of Dallas, Texas are older. That’s just amazing. Also, there is more to enjoy! Virginia has 59 anime and manga shops. This should guarantee plenty of time and investment on otaku goodies. Not just in the state of Virginia, but elsewhere in the region as well. As the anime and manga market continues to grow in America, Virginia is among those who will enjoy this advantage. For otaku in Virginia, the options are endless. The growth is infinite. Like many states, the market in Virginia continues to grow. The landscape is continuously expanding. There is no doubt that Virginia will continue to thrive as a state for otakus.
8. Maryland

Nickname: The Old Line State
Population: 6.165 Million
Region: Northeastern, East Region
Capital: Annapolis
Abbreviation: MD
Number of Conventions: 6 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 75 (As of 2024)
My fellow otakus, here we are! Say hello to the east coast state that ranks and recognizes the most as otaku. Aka, The Old Line State, Maryland. Like Virginia, Maryland is a state that exactly emulates what Virginia is, but basically from the Northeastern region. Washington D.C. is next to Maryland. It is by far the closest state from any other and heavily contributes to Maryland’s fortunes. In terms of ranking, Maryland is widely recognized among otakus. It ranks as king because Maryland is the highest ranked state from the northeast. It beats favorites like New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Maryland is the highest state to be from the east coast on this list. It is the highest ranked state that uses the eastern Atlantic time zone. It’s also the highest ranked state that borders the Atlantic ocean. It is also the third highest ranked state that is considered minority majority population. Maryland is known for its important history. This includes seaports and scientific studies. It is also the birthplace of the national anthem of the United States of America. In spite of that, the otaku landscape for Maryland, for a state of its own size, is fairly moderate. When it comes to the amount of anime cons in The Old Line State, its notably low. Maryland is home to just 6 anime cons in the state. Speaking in numbers, that number is low. This fact underscores Maryland’s uniqueness. It is among the highest ranked states but does not have more than 10 anime cons. As a matter of fact, that makes Maryland one of the lowest in the country. When discussing the biggest anime convention in Maryland. The state holds the honor of having one of the largest anime conventions located in the region. One that’s within, and it’s called Katsu Con. Located in National Harbor. It is not only Maryland’s biggest anime con. It is also one of the biggest anime cons in the country. It enjoys a strong reception and popularity within the state. This extends to the region and nationwide. Katsucon was first inaugurated in 1995. This event gave Maryland its title. It’s one of the few states in the country to inaugurate an anime con before the 21st century. Katsucon is immensely popular. It draws a large number of attendees from both within and outside the state. This anime con enjoys such strong popularity, that local media outlets give extensive media coverage to Katsucon. In fact, Katsucon is extremely popular. The official government of Maryland acknowledges it as an essential part of tourism for The Old Line State. Other popular anime cons in Maryland include HanaCon, Miryokucon, and CHS Otaku Fest. When discussing the anime and manga shops in Maryland, you will find that the state proudly boasts having many shops. It has some of the largest amounts. Maryland’s 76 anime and manga shops is the highest number of any state in the northeastern region. It’s also the third highest on the east coast Atlantic, behind North Carolina and Florida. Truly an astonishing feat…
Overall, Maryland’s otaku landscape seems like a huge contradiction. This is especially true given how it ranks so high on this list for those who recognize as otaku. It even bests bigger states like New York or Florida. This is because of the state’s small size of anime conventions and its reputation. Yet, the otaku landscape for otakus in The Old Line State is much better. It is far better than what many, including myself, thought. A major key point to Maryland’s otaku landscape is its hosting of one of the largest anime cons in America. This convention is well-known across the country. Katsucon is enough for many otaku in Maryland to enjoy getting the best out of anything otaku. It should be strongly reinforced. Otakus in The Old Line State not only have an anime con that’s big in Maryland. It’s also one of the biggest in America, as well as the east coast Atlantic and northeastern region. Otakus in Maryland gain greatly from knowing they have 6 other anime conventions in The Old Line State. Also, otakus in Maryland have another great advantage. They know that they are closest to the legendary Otakon of Washington D.C. among all states. Otakus living in The Old Line State enjoy the unprecedented privilege of visiting two gigantic anime cons in America. They can easily attend both Katsucon and Otakon. Also, that’s not all. Otakus in Maryland can also visit other anime cons from other states. From New York’s ANYC, to Massachusetts’s Anime Boston, and to New Jersey’s AnimeNext. As well as plenty of other anime cons even in the Midwestern and the southern region. There are 76 anime and manga shops. They offer many otaku in Maryland a chance to enjoy spending time investing in otaku goodies. This is true both in the state and out of state. The anime and manga market continues to grow in America. Meanwhile, Maryland, like many other states, continues to see a growth of infinite greatness. As the market grows, Maryland’s otaku landscape expands as well. For many otaku in Maryland, they have it far better than what many of us think of believed in.

You know the saying that goes. In Texas, everything is BIGGER. In other words, you don’t mess with Texas. Want to know what else is BIGGER in Texas and you don’t mess with? Their love for anime and manga, and the otaku culture in their state. Texas’s ranking in this list makes it the highest ranked state to be from the southern region. It is the highest ranked state that is also the biggest in landmass in mainland America. It is also the second biggest in America second only to Alaska. It is the highest ranked state with multiple time zones. It is also the highest ranked state that borders the Atlantic ocean. Texas is also the third highest ranked state on this list from the sun belt region. Also, Texas is the highest ranked state in this list not to be from the west coast region. Texas is also the highest ranked state on this list that has multiple climates. Texas is famously known as The Lone Star State because of their pride and independence. In fact, their state was independent for 10 years until it finally joined the union. It boasts a proud and rich history of American greatness for the country as a whole. Industries in Texas range from agricultural to technological, to aerospace, and to energy. The state also enjoys having some of the richest companies located in the state as well. The state makes strong economic and historic contributions to the American image. Its soft power is strong and well-represented throughout America. Giving birth to the cowboy image that many anime and manga love to base their stories off. In fact, while the state has always enjoyed strong power, its fortunes have only increased dramatically in the 21st century. Every year, The Lone Star State receives a large number of people from other states. They move into the state to find prosperity. Texas holds a remarkably strong soft power. As a result, The Lone Star State has become a sensation in America. It is also a sensation around the world. Many Japanese are familiar with the state of Texas. The Lone Star State holds a historic and hidden connection with Japan. In fact, they go by, Te-Ki-Sa-Su, meaning, Texas in Japanese. Texas has the second largest population in the nation, after California. It also boasts the second largest economy in the country, again after California. Texas is the largest state in the mainland. It is the second largest state as a whole, behind Alaska. Texas is also the most populated state in the southern region as well as the largest in size. The Lone Star State is also home to a diverse climate. Having the most diverse climate in the region. Ranging from forest and grassland climate in the east, to desert climate in the west. Texas uniquely holds the honor of being the only southern state that borders two time zones. It transitions from the Central Time Zone to the Mountain Time Zone. Due to its large size, the saying “everything is bigger in Texas” applies. The landscape for otakus in The Lone Star State can be described as diverse and vibrant. It is often regarded as having one of the best otaku landscapes in the entire United States. In fact, to say that Texas has one of the best, is a MASSIVE understatement. I’d argue that The Lone Star State, has arguably, the best otaku landscape in the entire country. No state in America is even capable of making a scratch on besting the otaku landscape of Texas. The Lone Star, basically, triumphs over every other living existence of all other states in America. don’t believe me? Well, first, I want you to hear what Texas has to offer. It’s for the otakus living in The Lone Star State to see what Texas exactly has. It’s also for those living outside to understand why it’s arguably that good. Before we talk about anime cons, remember that Texas is home to many corporations. These corporations contribute to the advancement of anime, manga, and otaku culture in America. From companies like Crunchyroll Dubs (Formerly known as Funimation), Sentai Filmworks, Anime Sekai LLC, and plenty of more. Imagine that? That makes Texas one of the very tiny few that boasts corporate power for otaku in a state. Oh, and that’s not all. The Lone Star State, is home… To a whopping, 52 anime conventions located. This is a record number for any state. It is by far the most anime conventions located in a state in the entire nation. No state even matches the numbers Texas has. Also, the record makes Texas the only state in the country with more than 50 anime conventions. Combine an entire region of other states. They will only match the number of Texas’s anime conventions or barely overtake it. Also, Texas is one of the three states that have more than 20-40 anime conventions. The other states are Florida, which is a neighbor, and California, which is a rival on the west coast. Determining the biggest anime con in Texas is complicated. The Lone Star State hosts many large anime conventions. Fun fact, did you know that Texas was the first ever state to host an anime con? Yamacon in 1983. Now, Texas is the state with the oldest anime con dating back to 1990. A-Kon. Back to the topic. These conventions not only rival, but even overtake, already large-sized anime cons from other states. Of course, if we are talking about the largest anime con in Texas, then that title belongs to San Japan. San Japan is located in San Antonio Texas. It is not only Texas’s largest anime convention in the southern parts of Texas. It is also the largest anime con in Texas. Also, it is the second largest anime convention in the southern region second only to Anime Weekend Atlanta. First Inaugurated in 2007, it has become one of the most well known anime cons in the state of Texas. It is also one of the most recognized in the southern region. It is also famous across America as a whole. It enjoys receiving a large amount of attendees both in the state of Texas and out of state. Including breaking the record for a high amount of attendance in 2024. It enjoys great popularity and receives extensive media coverage from local media outlets. Including generated hype among those of San Antonio. Other notable anime cons in Texas includes Anime Frontier, A-Kon, Otaku Oasis. As you have noticed, much of the otaku strength is concentrated in the Dallas Fort Worth. Also known as the dfw. When it comes to the amount of shops that have or specialize in anime and manga, well… Like the anime con scene, the shop scene, is arguably, the best in the entire country. Double the crown. Texas is home to a whopping 149 shops in the state. That number makes Texas the state with the most shops located. Not only that, but, Texas is one of the few states that officially boasts corporate shops of anime and manga. Also, not only that, but Texas boasts having Kinokuniya in their state. Making it yet another plus for otaku in Texas. Multiple of them actually! It gets even better as Texas is home to exclusive Japanese shops that have that authentic merchandise feel for otakus. As I said before, don’t mess with Texas’s love for being otaku!
Overall, well… We need to be honest here… The landscape for otakus in Texas perfectly sums up on why the state ranks in the top 10. The only surprising thing is, I expected it to rank higher, but that is due to demographic setbacks. None the less, that shouldn’t deter someone from knowing how the otaku landscape screams perfection for Texan otakus. Symbolically, as stated before, Texas is the most otaku state not from the western region. For many otaku in Texas, The Lone Star State is the textbook definition of perfection. Otakus in Texas will be pleased to know that their state will always be vibrant with otaku activity. The activity will be endless. There is so much for the otaku to do in Texas. Sometimes, that advantage will become an issue. Some otaku in Texas will be overwhelmed. They will know how much there is to do. Nonetheless, only a few activities can be done. Such greatness everywhere huh? Texas is in the center of America. Otakus in Texas will be pleased to know that their state is home to the most anime cons. They will be happy to know that two other big states are close by. These states have the identically the same number of anime cons. California from the west, and Florida from the east. Texas otakus will be pleased. They know their state has multiple big anime cons. These events will reward them with endless time for engaging in many otaku activities. Ranging from the big number of anime cons. Anime cons like San Japan, A-Kon, Anime Frontier, and Anime Oasis will become major attractions. Texas otaku will enjoy the diversity these events bring to their lives. Most of them being big and multiple in numbers. Another positive is, there are plenty of none anime con otaku activity for many otaku in The Lone Star State. Ranging from games, community, music, cosplay, and so much more. Its endless for the Texan otaku. Another amazing part is, there is an anime con for nearly all regions in Texas. East, west, central, south, north, you name it! Its no wonder Texas’s otaku love is so big! Best part is, they have all other 50 states to visit as well. For the shops, as stated before, Texan otakus will be pleased. They know their state has the most of any in the country. The positive part is, their state has exclusive anime and manga shops. They also have shops from Japan in the state of Texas. Kinokuniya being a prime example of that. Best part is multiple of them are located! With at least 149 shops, the Texan otaku will NEVER stop investing. Best part is, Texas’s safe economics will help the otaku invest with ease and no trouble. Recently, The Texas Rangers held a collaboration with Jujutsu Kaisen. Cementing more otaku greatness in The Lone Star State. Otakus and baseball fans will be very happy to know this. The anime and manga market continues to grow in America. Still, I’d argue that Texas is one of the few states in America that was already ahead of the game. Like its rival California, Texas contributed to many otaku landmarks in the country. It still continues to contribute to these landmarks today. For many people in the Lone Star State, Texas is a pioneer of anime and manga greatness in America. Truly amazing…
6. Washington

Nickname: The Evergreen State
Population: 7.739 Million
Region: Northwestern, Pacific West, West Region
Capital: Olympia
Abbreviation: WA
Number of Conventions: 7 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 19 (As of 2024)
GIRUGAMESH! That word you just read is special. Many otakus who have been around the community for a long time remember it. This quote remains an iconic meme from the year 2009. Many in the older otaku community, including myself, still remember it. That quote comes directly from none other than a 2009 commercial. It is from the great Sakura Con in the city of Seattle. Introducing Washington State. The Evergreen State from the west coast region. Here’s an interesting fact. The Evergreen State is the second state on this list to border the Pacific Ocean. This inclusion starts after Wyoming. The other neighboring state is Oregon. Also, Washington is our first visit to the west coast since Oregon. This ranking itself also makes Washington State the highest state ranked on this list that’s bordered with Canada. A little spoiler alert, but what you are about to witness, is west coast domination after Washington. The Evergreen State is known for its beautiful nature. It also boasts a powerful tech industry. Home to tech and industry giants like Microsoft, Amazon, which ironically, otakus use to rely on for personal use. Even though their numbers are moderate to small, The Evergreen State boasts strong otaku passion. Its landscape is largely aided by regional power thanks to its bordering of the pacific as well as neighboring states. Washington State’s amount of anime conventions located, are actually minimal. The state is only home to just seven anime conventions. That makes The Evergreen State one of the many in the country with anime conventions less than 10. On an even brighter side, Sakura Con from Seattle holds the title of the largest anime convention. It is well known and was earlier mentioned before. Sakura Con is the largest. It is also the oldest in Washington State. It ranks as the second oldest on the west coast and is among one of the oldest in America. First Inaugurated in 1997, Sakura Con isn’t just a well known and popular anime con. It is one of the most iconic anime cons in America and the world. It is considered a mecca not just for otaku living in Washington State or the west. It’s a mecca for otaku all over America. In fact, many die-hard otaku consider Sakura Con to be sacred art among many. Even those from outside the state make the journey. They come regardless of their home state, its region, or travel distance. Various activities like cosplay, merchandise, games, dances, J-pop, and idols are featured at Sakura Con. Japanese culture is celebrated there. Even the biggest known names from both Japanese and American industries have attended. In fact, Sakura Con is so well known that even the government of Washington State and Seattle recognize it. They see it as an important part of the city’s identity and use it for tourism. In fact, Sakura Con is so beloved that the con itself enjoys extensive media coverage from local media outlets. Other notable Anime cons are Anime Washington, Anime Impulse Seattle, and KuroNekoCon. When it comes to the amount of anime and manga shops, they are surprisingly small. The Evergreen State is home to just 19 shops based on anime and manga. Washington State ranks highest on this list for having the fewest anime and manga shops in the mainland. It is also the second highest on this list in total. On a brighter side, it is home to several exclusive shops originating from Japan. These shops are based on anime and manga. It proudly hosts Japan’s Kinokuniya. This makes The Evergreen State one of the few in America with a Kinokuniya location. A good twist at least.
Overall, Washington State’s otaku landscape can be summed up with one word: Bizarre. The Evergreen State’s numbers aren’t really the most convincing. This is, especially in spite of being in a region that is specialized for easy Japanese imported goods. Despite all of this, Washington State’s identification as otaku for ranking is arguably one of the highest. Instead of many factors, Washington State’s strength for the otaku landscape mainly comes from historical events. These events have lasted for a while. Many otaku in The Evergreen State gain from their state hosting a well-known anime con. Even better, as stated before, It is also one of the biggest in America. That’s none other than the great Sakura Con of Seattle. This is a huge advantage for many otaku in Washington State. Otakus in Washington State can be proud. They are in a state with one of America’s top ten biggest anime conventions. Seven other anime cons are located in the state. This provides a huge advantage for otakus in Washington State. Even better, for its size, travel will be easy. To make matters even more darn better, those in the state are bordered by several states. These states have a moderate to strong otaku landscape. Examples include California, Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona. Additionally, they are bordered with another nation close to another city, Canada… Specifically Vancouver. That’s a unique achievement in Washington State that other states bordering share. On a slightly less positive note, those small numbers of shops will certainly leave many lamented. For a state with historical greatness to the otaku culture, one would expect more shops located. None the less, 19 enough is decent for Washington State otakus. Never mind that their state holds the honor of having Japanese exclusive shops located. So that fills a massive void. Washington State otakus are indeed guaranteed to invest time in both otaku activity and goodies. The otaku landscape is growing in every state. Washington State is part of that growing list. Potential has already been achieved in The Evergreen State, and will continue to do so for prolonged period of time.

Arizona is known for being the birth of old wild western culture in America. The state is known for its strong hot climate. It is famous for its nature of life and historic attractions. The Grand Canyon State’s otaku landscape is arguably one of the best in the country. It is also one of the best in the western region. When it comes the anime convention scene, the numbers, like most states, are moderate. Arizona is home to just 8 anime conventions in the country. But, when compared to other states that have a majority of just 3-4 anime convention numbers, Arizona ranks as excellent. In fact, for that number, it is considered relatively high on average as opposed to other states. When discussing the biggest anime con in Arizona, the largest is Saboten Con. It is located in the city of Phoenix. Fun fact, Saboten means cactus in Japanese. Get it? Symbolic huh? Saboten Con is Arizona’s largest anime con in the state. Saboten Con was first inaugurated in 2008. It is not only the largest anime con in Arizona. It is also the most popular. Saboten Con is also the most attended anime con in Arizona. It enjoys a large number of attendees both within the state and from outside. In fact, Saboten Con is considered great importance for among many other otaku in The Grand Canyon State. The con also enjoys being one of the largest anime cons located in the southwestern region. In fact, Saboten Con is considered such of great importance, that it enjoys extensive coverage from local media outlets. Other notable anime cons in Arizona include Anime Arizona, Taiyou Con, and Anime Wonder Festival Tuscon. Arizona offers many anime and manga shops. The number is one of the best in the region. It is also one of the best in the country. Arizona is home to at least 82 shops that have or specialize anime and manga. Those 82 numbers make Arizona large in numbers. They also make it one of the states with the highest amount of shops in the entire country. It is one of the many with more than 50 shops. The truth is, this is a excellent record. Truly amazing from Arizona.
Otakus in Arizona will be plenty spoiled. This is true no matter how many times you or not deny it. Their state has a significant amount of otaku arsenal. It’s no accident that Arizona ranks number 5 on this list. Like many western states, Arizona has a brilliant otaku landscape. This includes both anime conventions and shops. It symbolizes the western region’s stronghold for those identifying as otaku. Arizona otakus have something special to enjoy. Their state isn’t just home to 8 anime cons. It is also home to a big name anime con. With the size of the state, that alone, is enough to leave otakus in The Grand Canyon State eternally occupied. It gets even better for otaku in Arizona. They not only have a state with a good amount of anime cons, but they also border a state. This neighboring state has one of the ultimate lists of anime cons in the country. Aka, neighbors California. Guess what? Its not just California, but over there next door through New Mexico is Texas. Aka, the state with the largest amount of anime cons in the country. Even with a little more distance, states like Washington State are also an awesome guarantee. Neighbors like Nevada can supply well for Arizona otakus as well. Finally, another positive addition to otaku life in Arizona is knowing they have at least 82 anime and shops located. That alone is enough for Arizona otaku to invest in goodies with an unlimited amount of greatness. This is helped by neighboring western states. They boast strong exclusive anime and manga shops from Japan. This includes states like California or Nevada. The otaku landscape of the anime and manga market continues to grow for all states. Arizona enjoys flourishing with infinite growth, like many others. With a state that is already good with the landscape, it will continue to grow in no time. Popularity is on the rise. The market is expanding. Maybe Arizona will finally boast even more anime and manga exclusive shops from Japan. Growth is certain.
4. Alaska

Nickname: The Last Frontier
Population: 732,673
Region: Arctic, Northwestern, West Region
Capital: Juneau
Abbreviation: AK
Number of Conventions: 2 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 4 (As of 2024)
My fellow otakus. Here we are, with, what I would like to consider, the biggest upset ever in this list. I can confidently say that of all states in this list, this one astonishes me the most. You think states like New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Washington State, Georgia, and Illinois would rank higher. These states have a larger economy, population, and reputation. Yet, here we are with the biggest surprise of the rankings. Proving once again, that no matter the circumstances, demographics, and lone of passion for otaku life, is infinite. That state, is none other than Alaska. Also known as, The Last Frontier. With this ranking, Alaska is the highest ranked state on this list that has the lowest population. It also has the largest landmass. The state also ranks the highest that’s the coldest and also borders Canada. Alaska is also the highest ranked state on this list from the northwestern region. Known for its arctic climate, densely populated lifestyle, resources and wildlife. In spite of its rank, Alaska has one of the poorest otaku landscapes. It is safe to say, it is arguably one of the worst in the country. The Last Frontier is home to only just one anime con in the state. This record makes Alaska the highest ranked state on this list with just one anime con. It’s also the highest ranked state on this list with the fewest anime cons since starting with Wyoming. Keep in mind, though, that Alaska’s sole anime con in the state, were two. Senshi Con, and Hanabi Con. Earlier, they were hosted during the earlier years. 2023, and 2024. Still, it is unknown if an anime con is happening in Alaska this year as of 2025. If we are talking about the most iconic and the most famous, that title belongs to Senshi Con. Senshi Con is the biggest anime con in Alaska. It is also the oldest in the state. Furthermore, it is one of the oldest in the country and the western region. First inaugurated in 2005, it is Alaska’s staple anime con for otakus. It also enjoys having a large amount of attendees. Additionally, it enjoys extensive media coverage in the state of Alaska. But, lately, since the horrific pandemic, Senshi con has been in M.I.A., and for many otaku in Alaska, they wonder if Senshi Con will ever come back? Sadly, Alaska otakus are left in the cold. They wonder if their state will have any anime cons in the next upcoming years. For now, let’s hope that’s not the case. Let’s see if Alaska will continue its tradition of anime cons. Similarly, when it comes to the number of anime and manga shops in Alaska, the numbers are very low. Unfortunately, they are among the worst in the country. Alaska is home to just only 4 shops that have or are specialized in anime and manga. This number makes Alaska the highest ranked state on this list for having the lowest number of shops. It is also the only one in the top 10. It does not have more than 5 or ten of them. Truly a great surprise to say the least!
Overall, Alaska otakus are facing a cold truth. Their weak otaku landscape puts them at a HUGE disadvantage. Especially when compared to other states. While states or territories outside mainland America usually lag behind, it’s a lot more brutal for otakus. Yet, in spite of this, their ranking as high identification being otaku boils down to demographic and geographical advantages. It just comes to show how much advantages many otaku have when they live on the west coast. Especially when bordering with the pacific. But, when that’s removed, one will see the brutality of the resources that otakus have in Alaska. Otakus in Alaska will have to fully rely on their in-state otaku resources. This will help them get the best out of all the otaku fun stuff. The sad part is, Alaska is home to only two anime cons. but, it is unknown if either of them will return. If they don’t, unfortunately, otakus in Alaska won’t manage to attend an anime con of their own. To make matters worse, the geographical locations do not favor otakus in Alaska whatsoever. Since Alaska is not in mainland America, and borders with Canada, travel will be a major issue for most otaku. Not only that, but Alaska borders with Canada. For many otaku, traveling through a different border is no easy task especially due to some legal issues. Also, not only that, but their closest state is Washington which will need air travel or even a ferry travel. Otaku traveling to other states will need even more distance travel which cause some massive strain for Alaska otaku. For many otaku in Alaska, they feel trapped. Alaskan otaku will have to rely on other states. This is necessary for them to travel for anime convention activity. If there is good fortune, the two anime cons earlier mentioned, Hanabi con and Senshi con, will reopen again. If they do, it would fill a massive void for many otaku in Alaska. The amount of shops is also a massive problem, as many Alaska otaku will have only just four. To make it more difficult, its so few for a state of its size. On the bright side, at least the state has some resources to offer. This will leave many otaku in Alaska feeling relief. The reality is, still, many Alaska otaku will have to fully rely on flight. They have to travel to Washington or California. Some can even journey to neighboring Canada to enjoy a landscape of diverse otaku activities. On the bright side, in the 21st century, as stated before, otaku can happen literally anywhere in the world. Thanks to the advancement of the internet and technology that makes our lives easily connected to nearly everywhere. As the anime and manga market continues to grow, so it will in Alaska. Although slower, its still growing none the less.
3. Nevada

Nickname: The Silver State
Population: 3.144 Million
Region: Western Region, West Region
Capital: Carson City
Abbreviation: NV
Number of Conventions: 5 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 83 (As of 2024)
Nevada has two signature slogans. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, and, Viva Las Vegas! If you ever want to know where the origins of Animangemu came from, just look at The Silver State, Nevada. Yep! That’s right my fellow otakus. All that work I made for the establishment of Animangemu all started in Nevada. In fact, if I had a state to call “my second home”, I would pick Nevada without thinking twice. Hence the slogan, “Home Means Nevada”. Anyways, back to the topic, Nevada, like most states in America with their nickname, is known as the Silver State. Pretty much the color opposite to California’s golden state nickname. It is also known as the Battle Born State due to the state’s achievements during the Civil War. Nevada is one of the biggest states in terms of landmass. It is also the driest state in the country. It is also one of the hottest states during the summer. Nevada’s ranking is the third highest in the western region. The Silver State is also the second highest state in Mainland America. Additionally, it is the second highest in the western region in mainland terms. Nevada is also the highest ranked state on this list with a majority desert climate. It ranks highest among the landlocked states on this list and It does not border the Pacific Ocean. Known for its socially diverse nature, Nevada offers lucrative entertainment, casinos, and gambling. It is famous for its nightlife, diverse nature, and landscape. The state also holds a rich history of Western America. When it comes to the otaku landscape, Nevada’s otaku landscape in the country is among arguably one of the best. Both in terms of region, and nationwide. Still, keep in mind that advantage is reserved to Nevada’s most populous county, Clark County. Home to the famous Las Vegas. Reno of Washoe County can be counted as another. Nevada’s anime convention scene, like most states is moderately low. At first, this seems like a bad thing. It doesn’t have as many conventions as other states. This includes its neighboring state, California. Nevertheless, this number is beneficial for otaku in The Silver State. Nevada is home to 5 anime cons. Equaling the same number as many other states in the country. Nevada is one of the few states in the western region to have 5 or more anime cons. Also, this makes Nevada the second highest ranked state with anime cons in a desert majority climate behind Arizona. Notably, much of the anime cons located in Nevada are concentrated in Las Vegas. When it comes to the topic of which anime con is the biggest in Nevada? That title belongs to Anime Las Vegas. First inaugurated in 2014, this anime can still be regarded as relatively new. It has since become Nevada’s largest anime. It is also the largest anime con located in the Las Vegas Metropolitan. Anime Las Vegas is one of the most popular anime conventions in the western region. It is also popular in the country. It enjoys having a large amount of attendance. It also enjoys receiving extensive media coverage from local media outlets. Other notable anime cons in Nevada include TsumiCon, Sin City Anime, and SNAFU con with the ladder being from Reno. Nevada offers a multitude of anime and manga shops. The state boasts one of the best numbers in the country. Nevada is home to at least 83 shops located. Not only is that number impressive, but that’s among one of the best in the country. That number makes Nevada among one of the highest in the western region and as well as the country. In fact, this raises Nevada to the second highest region in the western region behind California. It is also one of the few states with more than 50. An amazing feat indeed.
Overall, Nevada’s otaku landscape diverts from two narratives. Firstly, it is no surprise at all that The Silver State ranks so high on this list. It is due to demographics and geographical location. The truth is, for many otaku in Nevada, the number of anime cons isn’t the largest. Nevertheless, it is still a decent number for otaku to enjoy. Specifically for those living in Las Vegas, and to an extent, Reno. Even otakus outside the metropolitan areas know that they can still enjoy many ways to engage with otaku activities. They can do so both in the state and out of state. A significant advantage that otakus in Nevada have is knowing their state is home to 5 anime cons. In fact, there are even more. Those who live in Las Vegas and Reno are in a major bright spot. Their metros are home to several otaku activities beyond anime cons. It’s a significant plus that their state is home to one of the biggest anime cons in the country. This con is Anime Las Vegas. An amazing advantage for otakus in Nevada is knowing that their state borders California. California is one of the most powerful states for all things otaku. Nevada otakus also enjoy knowing they border other states with a good otaku landscape. These states include Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington State. They aren’t even far away from the Pacific to get the best out of Japan. From anime cons like Anime Expo, Sakura Con, Saboten Con, and much more. Not only that, but the shops are amazing too. With at least 83 of them, otakus in Nevada have plenty of options. They will never run out of time investing in otaku goodies. Their state has so much. Additionally, they border neighboring states with a lot. This means that the fun of otaku shopping doesn’t stop for them. It just gets better and better. Also, otakus in Nevada have a significant advantage. They have exclusive shops directly from Japan. There are also events based on Japanese culture. As the anime and manga market continue to grow in America, Nevada is no exception. This is even bettered thanks to Nevada’s geographies. Nevada’s growth is infinite. With the surging popularity of anime and manga, the expansion of otaku life is happening everywhere in America. Nevada will get the spoils in such powerful form. For many otaku in Nevada, the only thing that awaits is more greatness. Potential is not just infinite, but eternal in The Silver State.
2. California

Nickname: The Golden State
Population: 39.24 Million
Region: Western Region, Pacific West, West Region
Capital: Sacramento
Abbreviation: CA
Number of Conventions: 43 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 143 (As of 2024)
Say hello to arguably, the most otaku resource-equipped state in America. California, aka, The Golden State, is a state that needs literally no introduction whatsoever. California has historically contributed to the anime and manga market in America. This contribution, both past and current, remains significant even today. The truth is, if it weren’t for California’s massive investment, anime and manga wouldn’t have come from the Japanese pacific. America wouldn’t be as otaku as it is right now. California’s efforts have significantly influenced otaku culture nationwide. Ranging from corporations to home media, conventions, events, landmarks, merchandise, and so much. California’s otaku landscape holds significant power. Anime News Network called California, “the promised land for otakus in America.” California ranking as the second highest state gives the state a lot of unique feats. It makes The Golden State the highest ranked state from the west coast region in mainland America. This ranking makes California the second highest ranked state from the western region. It also makes it the second highest ranked state that borders the pacific ocean. California is also the highest ranked state in this list that uses pacific time zone. California, having the largest population also makes it the highest ranked otaku state in mainland America. They are the only two states with populations exceeding 20-30 million people in the top 10. In comparison, only California and its bitter rival Texas are included in this record. Ironically, California’s ranking makes it the third biggest state in the country behind Texas and Alaska. The Golden State is also one of the few states in the top 10 with big landmass. Second only to Texas and Alaska. The significance of California’s history in America goes beyond boundaries. The Golden State’s historical importance to the country’s identity is the most achievable and the greatest of all time. One would argue that California was the pioneer of greatest state soft power. To this day, it remains a leader in national soft power. California is a state that has a long history of many achievements. Ranging from technological advancements, business advancements, entertainment, sports, inventions, and many other amazing significance. California has the largest economy of any state in America. If it were to be a nation itself, then it would be the fourth largest economy in the world. It is also the most populated state in the country. Home to at least 39 million people. California is also the third largest state by size in the country. As well as the largest in the western mainland region. It also has the largest sub economy in the world. Its the leading state for America’s global supply chain with at least 40% of imported to the US. California is known for being the epicenter of technology. Thanks to Silicon Valley. Home to many iconic places recognized by the world like Los Angeles, San Francisco and more. Speaking of those, The Golden State has a long history of engaging in Japanese culture. California is home to the second largest population of Japanese Americans behind Hawaii. California is integral to its engagement with Japanese culture. In Los Angeles, there is a place called Little Tokyo. Offering you the most authentic Japanese experience directly from Japan in Los Angeles. Of course, California’s brilliance isn’t just exclusive to Japan, but the entire world. Just say the word California and everyone would know where that is. California is such an amazing state in American history. Its name is synonymous everywhere. This is not only in America, but worldwide. Finally, when it comes to the topic of the otaku landscape in California, there have been flaws and recent setbacks. Yet, it can still be regarded as having one of the greatest in the country. It’s not just the cons or shops that make California a great state for otaku. The Golden State is home to many large corporations. These corporations contribute to the anime and manga greatness in America. Viz Media, Crunchyroll, Netflix anime, Seven Seas Entertainment, Aniplex of America, and so much more. Finally, when it comes to the anime convention scene, its one of the best in country. California is home to at least 43 anime cons. That number makes California the second state with the most anime cons behind only bitter rivals Texas. In spite of this, California is the only state alongside Texas and Florida to have more than 20 anime cons. It hosts from 20 to 40 anime cons within its borders. The topic of the biggest anime con in California is very easy. That title belongs to none other than the great and well known Anime Expo. Also known as AX. Anime Expo is the biggest anime con in California. It is also the biggest Anime con in America. Additionally, it is the biggest in the world outside Japan. First inaugurated in 1991, making it the second oldest anime con behind Texas’s A-Kon (1990). It is California and America’s most famous anime convention in the entire world. Anime Expo holds a storied legacy for many otaku not just in The Golden State, but for the entire country. Anime Expo has since been a key part of entertainment for many otaku in The Golden State. It is also important for otaku across America. Attendance isn’t just large, but its so gigantic that it can sometimes feel overwhelming for many. Both newcomers, and veterans. Every year, when its July, and AX begins, otaku in the state of California, lineup to attend Anime Expo. Not only engaging with otaku activity, but also meeting industry greats from the anime and manga industry. Panels, announcements, games, cosplay, idols, you name it. It has basically everything. Many otaku across America travel from different states to attend Anime Expo. They undertake the journey for the significant fun it offers. Be it fellow western neighboring states, across the east, down south, or in the Midwest. For otaku in America, that doesn’t matter one bit. In other words, AX is basically the mecca of all things otaku in America. Anime Expo enjoys a wave of extensive media coverage from local media outlets. Even the government and Los Angeles officials recognize Anime Expo. It is of great importance for the tourism sector in California. Other well known anime cons in California include Fanime, Anime Los Angeles, and Crunchyroll Expo. When it comes to the amount of shops that specialize in anime and manga. For many otaku in California, the number is perfection. California is home to at least 143 of them. Making California the state with the second highest amount of shops second only to Texas. Not only that, but akin to Texas, California is home to a large amount of authentic Japanese exclusive shops. Including the well known Kinokuniya. MULTIPLE Kinokuniya! Not only that, but as stated before, California is home to many official corporations that have anime and manga merchandise. Making it even BETTER for California otaku. Truly what a marvelous sight.
Overall, the truth is, otakus in California basically have it all. There really is no need for such a long explanation. Otakus in California will be overwhelmingly spoiled with their options. They probably won’t know which one to choose first. But if we talk about how life is for otakus in California, we can describe it in one word. Perfection. California being the highest ranked otaku state in mainland America, and the second highest overall is no accident. For many Golden State otakus, it seems like identification is rife within those in the state. California otakus will be pleased knowing that there state is home to a plethora of anime cons. They will be amazed to learn their state hosts the most famous anime con in America. The most famous in the world outside Japan. The amazing Anime Expo (AX). Best part is, its every year. Not only that, but there state is home to many corporate sponsored cons that make the experience better. The only 43 anime cons are guaranteed to keep many otaku in California eternally active. Other well known anime cons like Fanime, Los Angeles Anime, and Crunchyroll Expo. Those cons are guaranteed to keep the Golden State Otaku occupied. Another amazing part? They are next to states that also have a good amount of well known anime cons in the country. States like Hawaii, Nevada, Washington State, Oregon, Alaska, Arizona, and Texas are nearby. They offer many otakus in California the chance to enjoy the best out of otaku activity. Even then, traveling to other states in different regions is a great opportunity. Otaku can get the best out of these experiences! Finally, California otakus aren’t too faraway from Japan. The shops are also an amazing abundance for otaku in California. Those 143 shops are guaranteed to keep many otaku in California eternally invested. Not only that, authentic Japanese exclusive merchandise will enhance the experience. It makes things even better for the otaku. Especially knowing that multiple Kinokuniya are located in California. Also, don’t forget about Little Tokyo too! Here’s a quick reminder. Sports teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Fransisco Giants regularly collaborate with anime and manga. That makes the exeprience even better. Especially for fans of anime and manga plus baseball! The anime and manga market continue to grow in America. Still, I’d argue that California is one of the few states that already had a strong market. This was true even before the explosive growth. As I mentioned earlier, if it weren’t for California, anime and manga wouldn’t have gained such a strong foothold. They wouldn’t be as popular in America as we see today. For many states, growth and potential is infinite, but for California, they already were from the beginning. The question is, despite all of this great arsenal, who’s above California?
1. Hawaii

Nickname: The Aloha State
Population: 1.442 Million
Region: Pacfic West, Western Region
Capital: Honolulu
Abbreviation: HI
Number of Conventions: 1 (As of 2024)
Number of Shops: 49 (As of 2024)
Aloha Hawaii! My fellow otakus. Say Aloha to the state that has the most identifying as otaku, as according to Google Trends. Hawaii, The Aloha State, is located the furthest away from Mainland America. It is in the far east of the Pacific. It is identified as the most otaku state in America. Not only does Hawaii ranks as the highest state ever for those identifying as otaku. The Aloha State also ranks the highest among many other things. Hawaii ranks among the highest of all in the western region, as well as the pacific west. Hawaii also ranks as the highest for a state furthermost away from mainland America. Hawaii also ranks the highest not from a mainland state. As well as the state with multiple languages. Hawaii also ranks as the highest with having the smallest landmass of any state in the top 10. Also being the fourth tiniest state in America. Hawaii also ranks the highest on this list with a different timezone than any other state. Hawaii is also the highest ranked state on this list with not having a population of 2 million and above. Hawaii also ranks as the highest state on this list that is a minority majority state. It is the closest to Japan. Speaking of Japan, Hawaii has the largest Japanese American population in the country. Hawaii is also the youngest state, starting after Wyoming on this list. Hawaii also ranks as the highest with having virtually no neighbors at all. Hawaii is also the only state completely surrounded by sea to be on this list. Hawaii, being the 50th state, is arguably the most unique state in America. The Aloha State is distinctively known to boast a homogeneous and indigenous culture unique to its own. Notably, its culture stands out from other states. The Aloha State is known for its Hawaiian culture. Its Polynesian roots, and historical roots different from other states. Hence why the word: :Aloha Spirit, exists within the people of Hawaii. Known for Agriculture, military defense, and tourism, The Aloha State’s otaku landscape isn’t regarded as the best in the country. Nonetheless, in terms of geographic, demographics, and location, it is significant for otaku in The Aloha State. The number of anime conventions in Hawaii is surprisingly low. The Aloha State has one of the fewest in the country. Surprise to many, but Hawaii is home to just one anime convention in the country. This state ranks as the highest in the country while having just one anime con. It is also the highest state not to have more than 5 anime cons. Obviously, because of this, Hawaii’s only known anime con in the state is named Kawaii Con. Get it? Hawaii, Kawaii? That’s such an awesome name. Concentrated in the capital which is the most populated, Honolulu. back to the topic, Kawaii Con is Hawaii’s most well known anime con in The Aloha State. It was first inaugurated in 2005 and continues to host as of 2025. This year, Kawaii Con celebrates its 20th anniversary. It is among one of the largest in the western region, in America, and the Polynesia region. It also enjoys a large amount of attendance. It not only enjoys good popularity but also an unprecedented amount of extensive media coverage from local media outlets. Also, that’s not it. Kawaii Con also enjoys having a large amount of people visiting from other states, and that’s right! You guess it! Members of the anime and manga industry attend Kawaii Con. The number of shops that have or specialize in anime and manga is significant. The Aloha State is home to at least 49 of them. Hawaii has a unique characteristic. It is one of the few states that receives many shops from Japan. It also enjoys many consumer areas exclusively from Japan. That’s really awesome!
Hawaii’s highest ranking in this list is primarily credited to its demographics. Its geographic features contribute significantly. It also has a rich history that shares a strong presence of Japanese culture. Hence why The Aloha State’s otaku identity is so powerful. Fun fact, Hawaii has the largest number of Japanese Americans. It is the top destination for many Japanese people visiting the Aloha State for vacation. Many otaku in Hawaii can feel spoiled. This is despite the fact that their state is only home to just one anime con. Kawaii Con. Still, one must keep in mind the location, and type of state they live in. Otakus in Hawaii will be happy. Their state has an anime con. Better part is, its one of the biggest, popular, and most well known in America. This positive will keep many otaku in Hawaii heavily invested in otaku activity. Hawaii’s otaku landscape is largely aided by community strength. Meaning that to find other Hawaiians having in common with otaku sensibilities is rife in The Aloha State. Much of the concentration of all things otaku are located in Honolulu. Even those outside Honolulu are still guaranteed to get the best of out with either their location, or travel. Also, another huge plus is, they are the closest to Japan. Hawaii otakus will enjoy knowing they are closest to Japan. They have the shortest travel distance thanks to their location. On a less positive note, many otaku in Hawaii will have a sad realization. Their location leaves them far away from many anime con greats in mainland America. Basically, their issue is akin to Alaska. Worst part is, they are much further from mainland America as opposed to Alaska. Attending big name cons will need air travel. Example of anime cons in California and Texas. On a brighter note, thanks to Hawaii’s location, many anime and manga shops are available. These shops will keep Hawaiian otaku heavily invested in buying up all the otaku goodies. The best part is, Hawaii is one of the few states with many Japan-exclusive shops. These shops offer a variety of anime and manga goodies. Best part is, some exotic goodies are there. Also, once again, thanks to location, a travel to Japan is a guarantee for Hawaiian otaku. They can buy otaku goodies with authenticity. The Anime and manga market continue to grow in America. While some states are growing, others had a head start already. There is no doubt that Hawaii is one of the few that enjoyed having that head start. Growth is infinite in America. Hawaii’s otaku landscape, although not among the biggest still enjoys having a good otaku landscape. The state, like many, will continue to grow strongly. This is thanks to the evolution of the anime and manga market here in America. Everyone, a round of applause for Hawaii being number 1.
