Hideaki Anno: “I’m sorry, but the audience will have to be the one to adapt.”

Death taxes and anime controversy. Ever since I started Animangemu, controversial topics with hot takes by famous figureheads of the anime industry have somewhat become the norm. Of course, this isn’t new, and this phenomenon dates back decades. Either it was Hayao Miyazaki saying that anime is made by people with unrealistic expectations—in a negative tone—which people mistakenly thought meant “anime is trash and was a mistake.” Nowadays, controversial issues have gotten more notable and a lot more common, especially this year in 2025.

Now Hideaki Anno joins the scene, and although he’s made previous controversial statements before, this one is his latest. But is it really controversial? According to some fans, it is—for them—and the reason why is clear. In a recent Forbes Japan interview, Anno stated that creators should not adjust anime for overseas or global audiences, emphasizing that works must first succeed domestically in Japan, and adding, “I’m sorry, but the audience will have to be the one to adapt.” Some fans (especially in Western discussions on platforms like Reddit and X) find this controversial because it feels like a rejection of global inclusivity, a pushback against localization pressures, or even a dismissal of “modern audience” sensitivities. Others, however, praise it as a defense of authentic Japanese storytelling against homogenization.

As we all know, in terms of popularity and industry business practices, anime as a whole has indeed globalized. Anime is more popular than ever, and people are watching anime—both old and new—racking up DVDs, buying up all the manga, and hogging all the merchandise. This year, we saw three anime movies dominate the box office worldwide: Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc, and Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution. All three enjoyed unprecedented success at the box office in Japan and internationally. Most notably, in countries like the United States, China, and numerous nations in Southeast Asia and parts of Europe, anime has not only enjoyed explosive popularity but has equalized—and even dethroned—once long-time pop culture favorites among the locals.

So, with such success globally, it’s no surprise that a critically acclaimed and legendary director like Hideaki Anno would be asked such a question. So, what’s going on exactly, and what did he say?

The Foreign Movie Tariffs: What’s Going on And Should us Otakus be Worried?

Whether you like him or hate him, we can all agree on President Donald Trump’s positive achievements that he’s made in regard to freedom of speech and protection from internet censorship imposed by European governments. The first starting with the corrupt payment processors and his executive order in tackling their corruption. Secondly, his hostile and bold opposition to the insane internet censorship and surveillance that has been occurring in Europe and parts of the world lately. Regardless of your political position, right, or left, we can all agree on the dangerous consequences of censorship, corruption, and mass surveillance. Of course, that’s just my opinion.

Unfortunately, there’s one glaring issue that a lot of people, including myself, can’t stand, and that’s the tariffs. The policy of tariffs has become a major issue for us, the American otaku. Ever since, the president has begun his tariffs’ policy worldwide, with the topic being specifically about Japan, the life of otaku investment on many specific goods like figures, cosplay, and other stuff have been GREATLY disrupted. From the specific tariffs on certain sections, to tariffs on other nations that contribute to making and importing these goods, and finally, the removal of the De Minimus rule that has caused a MAJOR disruption among Japanese companies that export these goods to the United States. Now, another major issue is occurring for the American otaku, and it’s the topic of foreign made films, the potential tariffs, and the impact it will have on the movie industry, but, exactly what’s going on, and should we be worried?

Demon Slayer Infinity Castle’s Success And Anime’s Mainstream Triumph Over Hollywood And Disney

Let’s be honest here… Our beloved anime and manga has become mainstream now… There is virtually NO denying it whatsoever. Now, obviously, when I talk about the mainstream appeal of anime and manga, I am well aware that the mainstream appeal is exclusively towards anime and manga series that people only talk about. Example, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Dadadan, and Chainsaw Man. Have you noticed a pattern here? All Shounen. In other words, while I am greatly aware that this mainstream appeal mainly applies to anime and manga that’s considered typical of the shounen trope, it doesn’t remove the fact that anime and manga as a whole has become ridiculously popular. Indeed, it has… Especially when you are about to hear what happened…

Demon Slayer: Castle Infinity has made history. Not just history, but MULTIPLE achievements in Japan, and worldwide. The movie has now earned a WHOPPING $550 million at the box office. Guess what? That number has now updated to $556 million. In fact, it could be more as I’m typing in this article. This movie is SO popular, that Crunchyroll is working to get this movie to win the Oscars… That’s how ambitious they are… The movie has broken records left and right. The question is, which records have Castle Infinity broke? What does Disney and Hollywood have to do with this topic? Well, that’s when the important part kicks in…

Another New 2025 Otaku Haul Goodies + New Updates

Sheesh. I seem to be on the role already. Honestly, that’s pretty freaking awesome. So, here is another haul of goodies that I got. Have you noticed that lately, I’ve been buying up anime DVDs and Blu-rays? Well, that’s because I want to start taking BD’s/DVDs collecting seriously. For the longest time, I have neglected them WAY too much. Compared to manga and video games which are enjoying hauls and large stacks of collections 24/7, poor anime is left behind in the dust. So, I’m changing that for this year. Not only that, but toys & games, live action, and books are getting their role as well. After that, they are next.

So as you can see, here I have Suzume, a movie from Makoto Shinkai hailed as a masterpiece among many. I can’t wait to watch this movie soon because I am a die-hard fan of Shinkai’s films, and from a distance, I can tell that Suzume is going to rock. I have enjoyed every film that he has made. Also, it includes an art card, which is pretty cool.

Another one I have is Whisper of The Heart. I am a big fan of Studio Ghibli, and I am on a quest to watch every Ghibli film in existence. I bought Whisper of The Heart because a close friend of mines recommended it to me. Especially since it takes place in the same setting where Pom Poko took place, which I also enjoyed to the max.

Another one is the Pokémon TCG Houndoom ex battle deck. I bought it because of its specialization in dark type Pokémon. Especially since Umbreon and Lokix, two Pokémon I regard as favorites of all time, are in this deck. I will hope to show all of you soon.

I hope to show off more soon.

Legendary Anime Studio Gainax Files For Bankruptcy

On the 40th anniversary of studio Gainax’s foundation, the studio behind the making of many epics and well known legendary anime, such as Gunbuster, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and Gurren Lagaan, have filed for bankruptcy in Japan. They have been acknowledged by the Tokyo District Court. Surely cementing the end of their existence as an anime studio. Another legend from the anime industry disappears into history, and will now only live as a memory for many otakus of the anime industry, as Gainax dies as a hero for the anime industry.
